Chapter 552

Lucian's face fell slightly. "I'll leave you to your work, Mr. Farwell. I'm just here for a drink. Don't feel obliged to entertain me."

Roxanne inclined her head before turning toward the bar. The bar was stocked with expensive wines, befitting a presidential suite. Some bottles were even vintage. Roxanne knew little about wine beyond its use as a sleep aid. After browsing the selection, she chose a bottle at random.

When Lucian heard the bottle open, he glanced at Roxanne's back. Though he couldn't see which bottle she'd chosen, he cautioned, "Red wine will give you a terrible hangover. Don't drink too much."

Roxanne grunted nonchalantly. The sound of her pouring wine was the only noise in the quiet suite. Lucian's attention was so fixed on her that he ignored his email.

Roxanne quickly finished a glass, but felt no drowsiness. Exasperated, she poured another, and then another, until she'd had five glasses. Drowsiness finally overcame her, but she realized she couldn't drink any more. Tidying the bar, she stood to return to her room, but her legs gave way. She moaned, staggering to her feet.

Just as she was about to fall, a strong hand encircled her waist. Lucian's scent filled her nostrils. "I told you to go easy on the red wine," he said, his voice laced with displeasure.

She remained silent, but upon noticing the warmth of his embrace, she snuggled closer. Lucian's eyes flashed at her movement; his grip tightened. "How are you feeling? Can you walk?"

Roxanne nodded, attempting a step, but lacked the strength. Her legs felt weak; she nearly tumbled from his arms simply lifting a foot. Frowning at her inebriation, Lucian swept her into his arms.

Roxanne was lifted before she could react. "I can manage..."

Lucian looked down. "Let me take you back. Quietly. Don't wake Essie."

Essie... Only then did Roxanne remember the little girl sharing her room. She fell silent.

Lucian took a few steps, sensing Roxanne had turned and rested her head on his shoulder. He saw she was unconscious, her cheeks flushed from the alcohol. His heart softened, and he slowed his pace.

"Benny..." she murmured sleepily as they climbed the stairs, her voice distraught. Lucian felt a pang in his heart; he knew she was dreaming of losing the boy. While aware of the ordeal's impact on her, its full extent was newly revealed to him.

Lucian's arm tensed as her murmuring persisted. "Benny is back," he reassured her softly. "He's fine now."
