"Daddy, you don't look so good," Estella remarked, sitting beside Lucian. A glance revealed the abnormality. Roxanne instinctively turned to look at him, but he turned away, showing only his profile.
"I had a late night. A lot of work to finish," he replied casually. Estella frowned, took a deep breath, and rubbed her nose. "I smell alcohol, too." Lucian remained silent, placing food on Estella's plate and ignoring her. Fortunately, the food distracted her, and she dropped the subject. Roxanne, however, continued to ponder Estella's words. "He only had half the wine, but there's only that much left in the bottle today," she mused. "He must have gone back for more last night." She studied Lucian. "He really doesn't look well. What was he thinking?"
"Mommy," Archie and Benny's voices interrupted her thoughts. "Sit down," they continued. Roxanne quickly composed herself, sitting beside them with an apologetic smile.
"How are you feeling, Ms. Jarvis?" Lucian asked abruptly. Roxanne froze, glancing up at him. The children also stared at the pair. They were puzzled by his question, left hanging as he paused. Lucian fixed his gaze on Roxanne, awaiting her answer. She recovered, flashing a confident smile. "I had a bit of wine and slept well afterward. I woke up with a slight headache, but I'm fine now. Thanks for asking, Mr. Farewell."
He nodded, ending the conversation. The children remained perplexed. "What did they just say? So he knew she was drinking, and they both look like they didn't sleep well. Something must have happened without us knowing."
Suspicious, the children tried to glean more information, but the adults remained secretive. Disgruntled, the children ate breakfast, their usual enthusiasm dampened.
After breakfast, no one suggested an outing; the adults' lack of rest was evident. Roxanne was lost in thought, unaware of the children's suspicions. Lucian, accustomed to following Roxanne's lead with the children—knowing they preferred her, especially since he'd started working—sat on the couch, resuming his work.
After breakfast, they all sat in the hotel room, lost in their own thoughts. With nothing else to do, the children began playing hide-and-seek, Estella joining in. She was content as long as she was with Archie and Benny, and Lucian and Roxanne were present. Their laughter filled the room as Archie and Benny caught Estella, despite her best efforts.
"Ms. Jarvis!" Estella cried, tugging Roxanne's shirt. "Yes? What is it, sweetie?" Roxanne asked absentmindedly.
"Play with us!" Estella looked at her expectantly.
