Chapter 648
Soon, Cayden dismissed Jessica. Only after leaving the hotel did Jessica fully grasp the situation. She struggled to break free, but it was too late.
After Jessica's departure, Lucian surveyed the crowd. A chill ran down everyone's spine as they met his gaze. They hastily dispersed. Instantly, only a few remained at the hotel entrance.
"Thank you for helping me," Roxanne murmured to Lucian, keeping her distance. She lowered her gaze, trying to compose herself before returning to Larry.
However, Lucian stopped her, taking her hand. Roxanne paused, wanting to pull away, but lacked the courage to confront him. She stood stiffly.
"Your thanks have always lacked sincerity, Ms. Jarvis," Lucian said enigmatically. He then addressed Jack and Larry, his tone shifting. "Mr. Damaris, Mr. Morrison, you couldn't even manage a drunken woman, endangering your business partner. This is hardly ideal for a collaboration."
Cayden's earlier report had only mentioned Roxanne's predicament. Lucian had intervened without hesitation, but discovering Jack and Larry's presence upset him.
Larry, noticing Roxanne's rigid posture, approached Lucian. "It happened so fast; we couldn't react. Thankfully, Roxanne wasn't hurt." A guilty look crossed his face. He'd only focused on defending Roxanne from Jessica's attack, failing to retaliate more forcefully. He knew he could have done better.
Lucian regarded him sardonically, then turned to Jack, awaiting an explanation. Jack's eyes darkened. He didn't offer excuses. "I am to blame. This happened because of me. I will handle the aftermath. Dr. Jarvis's reputation will not be tarnished by this misunderstanding."
Lucian's lips tightened. He frowned at Roxanne. He'd witnessed these men's closeness to Roxanne and felt threatened by their presence. Their failure to protect her solidified his resolve: he would never relinquish her to them. Roxanne was his, and his alone.
The tension was palpable. Roxanne, feeling the stillness, looked at the three men, noticing their strained expressions. She broke the silence. "Please let go, Mr. Farwell. I'm not running away."
Roxanne freed her wrist. Lucian raised an eyebrow but released her. He'd held her hand to prevent her from standing near another man; it wouldn't look right, regardless of her position. He assumed Roxanne understood. She did sense something amiss, hesitating before turning to Jack. "Mr. Damaris, isn't the car here yet?" It was late; she needed to go home.
