Chapter 650
Roxanne leveled a steely gaze at Lucian, questioning his accusations as if he were one of the many who didn't understand.
Lucian was momentarily stunned. He regretted his impulsive words, his tone softening as he said, โThatโs not what I meant.โ He simply didn't want to see her leave with another man.
His clarification was useless. Roxanne's face hardened. โWhat did you mean, Mr. Farwell?โ
Lucian frowned, glancing at Jack before continuing, โAfter the commotion, any attempt to defend you would fail if you were seen leaving with Mr. Damaris.โ He looked back at Roxanne, his voice low. โI know you may not appreciate my help, but I don't want my efforts wasted. Consider my position, Ms. Jarvis.โ
Roxanne was surprised; his words resonated. He was right. Many had witnessed the scene and heard Jessica's accusations. Without Lucian's intervention, she would have been branded a gold-digger, damaging both her and the Damaris family's reputation. His efforts would be undone if Jack escorted her home; those eager to smear her would seize the opportunity. She knew public opinion would turn against her.
Therefore, she abandoned her plan. Turning to Jack, she apologized, โMr. Farwell is right. Itโs inappropriate for you to send me home, Mr. Damaris. I will hail a cab.โ
Jack couldn't refute Lucian's sound logic.
Larry observed the two men, saying gently, โItโs late. Let me take you home.โ
Lucian retorted, โDo you think there's a difference between you and Mr. Damaris sending her home?โ
Larry frowned. Lucian was correct; both were central to the Damaris collaboration. Either sending her home would fuel speculation.
Unable to counter Lucian's point, Larry fell silent.
Roxanne smiled gratefully at Larry. โItโs alright, Larry. I wasnโt planning to trouble you.โ She turned to Lucian. Before she could speak, he interjected, โIโm not involved in the project. No one can slander you if I take you home. Besides, Archie and Benny are waiting. You wouldn't want to keep them waiting, would you?โ
Though still offended, Roxanne saw no better option. Lucian, she grudgingly admitted, knew her weaknesses and exploited them.
โSince Mr. Farwell has offered,โ Larry said, โlet him take you home, Roxanne.โ
After a pause, Roxanne conceded. โThank you, Mr. Farwell.โ
Lucian, his lips pressed together, bid the others a curt farewell before leaving with Roxanne.
