Chapter 678
Estella pouted, visibly upset. โI can play with the boys. I donโt need you taking care of me, Ms. Jarvis.โ
Roxanne felt a pounding headache. She tried a different approach, saying softly, โWhy donโt you come another day, Essie? Iโll accompany you then. I really donโt have the time today.โ
Before Estella could reply, Lucian interjected, โEssie, Ms. Jarvis said sheโs busy. Donโt disturb her.โ His tone, considering his recent mention of the Damaris family, was clipped.
Estella, shocked by her fatherโs icy tone, widened her eyes innocently, remaining silent but giving Roxanne puppy-dog eyes.
The cold wind roused Archie and Benny from their drowsiness. They too were surprised by their fatherโs tone, exchanging glances. We'd better not anger Daddy in the future. He's so fierce!
Roxanne disapproved of Lucianโs sternness, furrowing her brows. โEssie is still young. Donโt vent your frustration on her; be more mindful of your tone.โ
Lucian felt incredulous. Sheโs the one who sought my help, and now she criticizes my tone?
Estella, sensing Roxanne's support, nodded in agreement, huffing at her father.
Noticing their united front, Lucian massaged his temples, trying to suppress his anger. He softened his tone, saying, โQuit messing around. Ms. Jarvis is still wet; sheโll catch a cold. Essie, say goodbye to Ms. Jarvis and close the door.โ
Lucian knew how to command his daughterโs obedience.
Estella hesitated at the mention of Roxanne catching cold. She relented, waving goodbye. โHurry inside, Ms. Jarvis. Iโll play with Archie, Benny, and you another time.โ
Roxanne sighed in relief, smiling and nodding. โYouโre so thoughtful, Essie.โ
Archie and Benny, hearing Estellaโs departure, huddled by the car window. โWeโre taking you skateboarding next week!โ
Estellaโs eyes gleamed; she nodded enthusiastically, waving before starting to close the car door.
But Lucianโs voice rang out again, a hint of displeasure in it. โEssie, give Ms. Jarvis her things.โ
Estella looked around, then noticed the bouquet of flowers on the passenger seat. She pursed her lips, realizing Roxanne had left them. Fetching the flowers, she presented them. โYou forgot your flowers, Ms. Jarvis!โ
Roxanne was surprised. Lucian hadnโt indicated the flowers were for her; she hadnโt intended to receive them, leaving them in the car. She hadn't expected him to convey this indirectly.
Conflicting emotions surged as the realization hit her. Noticing Roxanne hadn't taken the flowers, Estella nudged the bouquet forward. โMs. Jarvis?โ
