“No! I waited for Lucian for six years. Why should I cancel our engagement?” Aubree protested, her eyes brimming with tears. She cast a pitiful glance at Lucian.
Lucian frowned. On a typical day, he would confront the Pearson family. However, their recent argument made that impossible.
Samuel's anger flared at Aubree's words. He slammed the table, yelling, “If you don’t cancel it, get out of this house! Don’t come back until you come to your senses! Get out!”
Samuel stormed from the study, his face grim. He nodded curtly to Lucian as he passed. Lucian watched him go, his brow furrowed. Aubree continued to sob.
Gina looked from her husband to her daughter, uncertain whom to approach. Finally, she turned to Lucian. “Lucian, uh… I don’t think Samuel will calm down soon. Could you bring Aubree to your place for a couple of days?”
Worried about his refusal, she added, “I know you have concerns about the engagement. After Samuel calms down, we'll talk. Don’t worry, Aubree won’t cause trouble.”
Aubree remained silent, sniffling. Lucian found himself in an unexpected predicament.
Considering Gina's mention of the engagement, he finally agreed. “I understand.” He then looked at Aubree. “Come with me.”
Aubree and Gina were secretly elated but maintained a composed exterior. Aubree even feigned hesitation before slowly approaching Lucian.
“Stay with Lucian for a few days. I’ll talk to your father. I’ll fetch you when he’s calmer,” Gina said, her eyes reddening with concern.
Aubree nodded tearfully.
After a brief nod to Gina, Lucian escorted Aubree from the Pearson residence. Gina watched them leave in Lucian’s car.
Once the car was out of sight, Gina's bitter expression transformed into a smug smile. Samuel descended the stairs, his anger seemingly subsided.
“Have they left?” he asked, cautiously looking outside.
Gina nodded gleefully. Their plan—to instigate a fake argument, prompting Samuel to banish Aubree, then enlist Sonya's help to bring Lucian—had worked flawlessly. With Aubree out of the house, Lucian, however reluctant, would be compelled to take her in.
Now, it all depended on Aubree. Their hope was that she would use this opportunity to win Lucian's heart and secure a place in his home, ultimately becoming his wife. Anticipation shone on Samuel and Gina's faces as they envisioned their plan's success.
