Chapter 714: You Have Been Having Insomnia
In the afternoon, they quarreled and later played with the children, so Roxanne hadn't paid much attention to Lucian's demeanor. But scrutinizing his face now, she saw the distinct dark circles under his eyes, evidence of severe insomnia in recent days. It was unusual for him to sleep so soundly. Even six years ago, when they shared a bed, he'd been a light sleeper, jolting awake at the slightest approach, then leaving the bed.
Recalling this, she sighed inwardly, gazing at the man sleeping peacefully before her. "Mr. Farwell?" she whispered, hoping to rouse him for treatment.
There was no response. Hesitantly, she placed her hand on his limp wrist. The instant her fingers touched his pulse, she noticed a frown, as if he were waking. Her heart jumped; she instinctively tightened her grip, then realized her mistake and tried to withdraw her handโtoo late.
Lucian, groggily aware of someone near, felt a hand on his wrist just as he was about to open his eyes. Instinctively, he grasped the hand and pulled the person into his arms.
"Uh..." Roxanne gasped, yanked into his embrace. She struggled to free herself. "It's me, Lucian! Let go!"
The familiar voice made him frown. He opened his eyes to see Roxanne sitting uneasily on his lap, panic-stricken. Already irritated by being awakened after days of insomnia, his gaze darkened at her aversion. He tightened his grip, immobilizing her.
"What are you doing?" Roxanne's brows furrowed. Sensing danger, she tried to escape, but his strength was too great.
Before she could speak further, his arms locked around her shoulders, forcing her to turn. She faced his grim expression. "Don't misunderstand. Essie said you've been having insomnia and begged me toโ" she began, flustered.
Lucian's frown deepened before she finished. "Keep quiet," he snapped, suffering from a terrible headache. Irritated, he covered her mouth.
Roxanne fell silent, frozen in his arms, afraid to move. When she quieted, his expression softened. He closed his eyes, then fully awoke. Seeing her still and immobile, his gaze gleamed darkly. Perhaps due to his inherent mischievousness, her fear sparked a desire to tease her. He realized she hadn't yet noticed he was awake, a fleeting smile crossing his lips. He leaned closer.
