Chapter 757: Please Stop the Guessing Game
Roxanne started to speak, but Lucian coldly interrupted. “That’s none of your concern. I know what to do.”
Stunned by his annoyance, Roxanne replied, “You’ve misunderstood. I’m only worried about Essie. Your relationships with others are none of my business.”
Roxanne believed Lucian was upset because she’d interfered with him and Aubree. She inwardly scoffed at her own assumption.
Lucian’s pent-up anger finally erupted. “Of course, my business is none of yours. You only care about Mr. Damaris!”
“What does that mean?” Roxanne was bewildered by his sudden shift of focus. She hadn’t anticipated his reaction, believing he would understand.
“You’re happy working at the Damaris family’s research institute, aren’t you? I know how much you wanted to be part of the project. Was their medical expertise the only reason?” Lucian’s sharp gaze seemed to pierce through her.
Roxanne frowned. “Besides their medical skills, what else is there that warrants so much effort?”
The Damaris family, having lived in seclusion, were known primarily for their medical prowess. Roxanne hadn't even known Jack existed before the consultation.
Lucian's implication that Jack was the sole reason for her dedication both frustrated and angered her. His suspicion clearly doubted her respect for medical science. His certainty grew as he witnessed her anger, and he said indifferently, “Your relationship with Mr. Damaris is obvious, Ms. Jarvis. No need for embellishment.”
He turned toward the living room, intending to take Estella home.
Roxanne insisted on explaining, despite not wanting a relationship with Lucian, refusing his accusations. “Mr. Damaris and I are just friends. Our public meetings were for work. Mr. Damaris and Larry are both excellent doctors. Please stop the guessing game! I won't end our professional relationships because of your suspicions!”
She needed to work with Jack while the project continued, and she had been friends with Larry for years. She wouldn't abandon either man because of Lucian's jealousy. Still, his suspicion was undeniably inconvenient.
Lucian only heard her final statement about not ending her relationships. He frowned, the atmosphere around him plummeting to a frigid point.
Roxanne, however, held her ground, meeting his gaze without flinching.
