Chapter 772: We Will Take Good Care of Essie

“What’s the matter, Dr. Jarvis?” Colby’s sleep was abruptly interrupted by Roxanne’s call. Seeing her name on the caller ID, he answered immediately.

Roxanne breathed a sigh of relief at the sound of his voice. “If it isn’t too much trouble, could you come to the research institute right now?” she said, cutting straight to the point.

Colby sat up. “Is something wrong?” he asked, already beginning to get dressed before she could reply. He knew it must be urgent, but he wanted details.

Roxanne glanced at the three children, her voice grave. “They’ve developed an allergic reaction due to a bacterial infection. The spray we developed might help, but I’m needed here. I need your help.” She hesitated. “Forget it if it’s inconvenient. I can go myself.”

By then, Colby had grabbed his coat and was already heading downstairs. “I’m leaving now and will be there soon.”

Roxanne expressed her gratitude. “I’m so sorry to bother you at this hour.”

Colby chuckled. “It’s fine. The children’s health is paramount. I remember how serious these allergies can become. Take care of them; I’ll be there as quickly as possible.”

Roxanne thanked him again before hanging up. By the time she returned to the room, Estella’s face was flushed bright red, and the red spots on Archie and Benny had spread to their necks.

It was the first time they’d been this ill. Despite their usual resilience, fear was evident. Roxanne’s heart ached at their distress, but she gritted her teeth and reassured them. “Don’t be afraid. It’s just an allergy. I’ve already called for the medication. Just be patient.”

The children nodded meekly, unwilling to add to her worry. Roxanne sighed silently, turning away. Despite Colby’s promise to hurry, anxiety gnawed at her. She went downstairs to wait.

Lucian’s gaze darkened as he watched her leave. His eyes fell on the three children.

Anticipating his intentions, Archie and Benny patted their chests. “We’ll take good care of Essie!”

Lucian nodded and followed Roxanne downstairs, where he met her as she was heading back upstairs with a pot of hot water. He took it from her. “What kind of illness is this?”

Roxanne didn’t hesitate. She grabbed fresh towels from the bathroom and followed him. “It’s an allergy caused by a bacterial infection. Adults can tolerate it, but children have weaker immune systems. If it continues, complications like high fever, laryngeal edema, and even asphyxia are possible.”

Lucian’s heart plummeted. Essie already had a high fever; a delay could be disastrous.

“I’ve already sent for the medication,” Roxanne said, her own heart heavy. “For now, I’ll use hot towels to relieve the itching.”

She’d originally planned to wait downstairs for Colby, but another idea had occurred to her. Lucian knew little about medicine, so he simply followed her instructions.
