Chapter 784: Stay At My Place For Now
Aubree didn't know where Lucian was taking her, but she dared not ask, fearing he would send her to a hotel. As she silently watched the passing scenery, the road became familiar. "Where are we...?" she asked hesitantly.
"I'm taking you to my mother's place," he replied.
Sonya had always favored Aubree. Lucian knew that if his mother learned he'd dismissed Aubree from the house, she would likely berate him. He preferred to send Aubree directly to his mother and explain the situation later, preventing any argument.
Aubree's heart sank. She'd only left the Farwell residence intending to visit Sonya later, hoping to discuss her situation and regain her place there. Now, with Lucian sending her to Sonya's immediately, she couldn't fabricate a story. It was too late; she could only watch as he drove into Sonya's mansion.
"Mr. Farwell. Ms. Pearson," the butler greeted them politely.
Lucian nodded, gesturing for the butler to take Aubree's luggage. The butler promptly obliged, carrying the luggage into the living room.
Sonya, having lunch, looked up in confusion at their arrival. "What's going on? Why is there a suitcase?" she asked, glancing at her son with disapproval. She then approached Aubree, led her to the dining table, and instructed the butler to set two more places.
"Did Lucian upset you? Why did you leave so suddenly?" Sonya asked kindly.
Aubree glanced at Lucian, then shook her head, offering a strained smile. "No. Lucian was kind to me."
Sonya was skeptical. "Then what's happening?" she pressed. Knowing Aubree's feelings for her son, she expected Aubree to be delighted to stay at the Farwell residence. Aubree's unhappy departure just two days later suggested otherwiseโthe only explanation being that Lucian had upset her again. However, Aubree's praise of Lucian contradicted this.
Observing Aubree's composed demeanor, Sonya shot Lucian a reproving look. "Didn't I tell you to take good care of Aubree?"
Lucian nodded indifferently. "I sent her here for precisely that reason."
Sonya frowned. "What do you mean?"
"Essie became ill last night, an allergic reaction to an unknown bacterium. The doctor said it's highly contagious. Although the house has been disinfected, I couldn't guarantee the bacterium's complete eradication. She risked infection staying there, so I sent her here." He omitted Estella's presence at Roxanne's to avoid unnecessary trouble for Roxanne.
Sonya, however, focused on his first sentence. "Essie's sick? How is she? Why didn't you tell me sooner?" she asked anxiously.
"She's fine now. The doctor I took her to is excellent," he replied.
Sonya finally relaxed. "All right," she said, "Aubree can stay at my place for now."
