Chapter 816: Earnest

After hearing the children's suggestions, Roxanne hesitated. Baking with them meant unavoidable interaction with Lucian. She looked at him across the table; his expression was indifferent, seemingly unconcerned. Considering his bland expression, she decided against overreacting. Smiling at the children, she agreed, "All right then!"

The children, now expectant, looked at Lucian, who nodded wordlessly. Triumphant cheers erupted. "Yay! Let's all bake together!" In their excitement, breakfast was barely finished; a couple of hasty bites before they jumped up, eager to begin.

Despite agreeing, Roxanne felt awkward about close contact with Lucian and subconsciously wanted to delay. Under the children's expectant gaze, she squirmed, finally rising to clear the table. The kitchen was too small, so they used the dining table instead.

The children graciously helped with the dishes. Once finished, they eagerly gathered around the table, awaiting the baking to begin. Roxanne laid out the utensils neatly. Estella took charge, assigning tasks: "Daddy and Ms. Jarvis will make the cake. The rest of us will decorate it."

Roxanne readily agreed and began working. Lucian, unfamiliar with baking, stood in a corner, frowning as he watched Roxanne. "Daddy, go on! Help Ms. Jarvis!" Estella tugged his sleeve, disapproval evident on her face. Lucian arched a brow, silently asking for instructions. With a dramatic sigh, Estella pointed to the eggs, indicating he should help crack them. He nodded, lending a hand.

Roxanne, unaware of their exchange, reached for an egg, her hand accidentally brushing Lucian's. Both froze for a moment. Roxanne quickly retracted her hand, as if jolted, forcing herself to calm down. "Go ahead," she managed.

Lucian, noticing her avoidance, his eyes darkening, continued silently. The ingredients were soon mixed; only the beating remained. This proved time-consuming. Roxanne began whisking but her arm ached, forcing her to slow down.

"I'll do it," Lucian's voice came from behind her. Before she could react, he took the whisk. She stepped back as he continued, his sleeves rolled high, revealing strong forearms. His brows were furrowed, his lips pursed in concentration, yet he seemed committed.

Roxanne was slightly dazed, realizing this was the first time she'd seen such earnestness from Lucian.
