Chapter 824: It Is My Fault
Hector exchanged pleasantries with Roxanne before their business meeting resumed. She led Hector and Jack on a tour of several sites, concluding their visit to the research institute near noon. They adjourned to a restaurant where she had made a reservation.
After leaving the institute, Jack quietly approached Roxanne, expressing concern. "You mentioned family matters," he said. "What were they, if you don't mind my asking? Dr. Jarvis wouldn't be late for an appointment."
She smiled faintly, her lips compressed. "Just Archie and Benny throwing a temper tantrum," she replied.
Jack nodded sympathetically. "Understandable with kids at home."
Hector turned to them. "What's this about? I missed it."
They quickly plastered smiles on their faces and joined him. Colby, unfamiliar with Jack and feeling somewhat out of place, lagged behind.
An unnamed emotion tightened Colby's heart as he observed the easy camaraderie between Roxanne and Jack, and Hector's obvious admiration for her. He had always been a silent admirer, watching Roxanne from afar. She certainly didn't lack for impressive men in her lifeโLarry, Lucian, and now Jack. He felt insignificant in comparison. Considering Old Mr. Damaris's evident regard for Roxanne, he mused, Jack would undoubtedly receive his blessing.
His gaze darkened, fists clenching at his sides. He admitted his jealousy, his yearning to be among the extraordinary men surrounding Roxanne, to stand beside her, even to inspire her admiration.
"Hurry up, Dr. Galloway," Hector said, turning to him.
Colby snapped back to attention, composing himself before catching up, maintaining a respectful half-step distance.
They settled at the restaurant. Hector then spoke, "There's another reason I'm here."
Roxanne stilled, her eyes instinctively flicking to Jack, remembering his phone call.
Hector's voice was grave. "Ultimately, the online rumors were my fault. I should have understood Jack's situation better before interfering."
Roxanne immediately protested, "It involved me; Ms. Hightower would have found another way to attack me. Don't blame yourself, Old Mr. Damaris."
Hector continued, unfazed. "The Damaris family is responsible, yet we did nothing. That young Farwell had to intervene. I need to thank him."
Her heart ached; a frown creased her brow. She started to speak, but no words came. Who am I to object if Old Mr. Damaris wishes to thank Lucian?
Colby, newly aware of Lucian's role in resolving the situation, felt a corrosive wave of jealousy.
