Chapter 833: Set Foot in the Farwell Residence
Sonya had initially wanted to shield Aubree from this, but with Aubree present, she could only offer evasive comments. "What makes Aubree inferior? How long do you intend to keep her waiting?"
Aubree glanced at Lucian, a faint smile playing on her lips. "I'm fine, Mrs. Farwell. I don't want to pressure Lucian." She lowered her head, appearing aggrieved. Sonya's heart ached at Aubree's thoughtfulness. She glared at Lucian, but he remained impassive.
"I'm not keeping her waiting," he retorted. "I've made my intentions clear from the start. You're the one prolonging things." He addressed Sonya directly, "You!"
Sonya exclaimed in exasperation, but Aubree gently restrained her. "Don't be upset, Mrs. Farwell. Lucian...he has his own way of doing things. There's no need to worry about me. Let him proceed as he wishes."
Aubree's understanding gaze met Lucian's before she turned back to comfort Sonya. Sonya felt increasingly sorry for Aubree, yet Lucian appeared unappreciative of Aubree's efforts. He merely glanced at her before focusing on his mother. "I'll manage my marriage. You should focus on your health instead of worrying about me."
He rose and left. Aubree's eyes reflected desolation as she watched him go. Sonya noticed. Releasing Aubree's hand, she called after Lucian, "Letting Roxanne marry into the family was a mistake! Perhaps she realized that herself when she left. Why are you still so preoccupied with her?"
He paused.
"Think about how she abandoned Essie yet raises those two boys flawlessly!" Sonya continued. "Isn't it obvious she doesn't love you?"
Her words stung. His expression soured.
"She may fool you, but she won't fool me. I don't care what you think. I'll never let a woman like her become part of the Farwell family!" Sonya declared furiously.
Aubree reached out to comfort her. Lucian stood at the mansion entrance for a few seconds before departing without another word.
Sonya watched him close the door, then turned to Aubree. "I know it's been difficult for you these past few years, but don't worry. What's yours will be yours, and I won't let anyone interfere."
Aubree nodded gratefully. "Thank you, Mrs. Farwell." She paused, then added self-deprecatingly, "But some things are beyond our control. If Lucian truly likes Roxanneโ"
Sonya interrupted. "We don't know what she's after, but I'm sure he'll realize the truth eventually." Even if he didn't, she would never allow Roxanne into the Farwell residence.
An imperceptible gleam of satisfaction crossed Aubree's eyes as she observed Sonya's intense dislike for Roxanne. With Sonya's opposition, she no longer needed to worry about Roxanne taking her place.
