Chapter 849: Something to Do With Me
Jack accepted Roxanne's coffee, murmuring, "Thanks." Roxanne sat beside him, her gaze solemn. "What should I do now?"
A major incident had erupted at Herbscape Group. Yet, Jack had arrived early that morning seeking her out, implying he needed her help. He countered her question with another: "Do you have a suspect in mind?"
Roxanne was taken aback. She did suspect someone, but hesitated to broach the subject. Subconsciously, she refused to believe Lucian was involved.
"Mr. Lacroix of Herbscape Group suspects Farwell Group," Jack stated flatly, fabricating Dean's words. "He believes Farwell retaliated after Herbscape cancelled their contract."
Roxanne frowned, silent. Dean's suspicions mirrored her own. Jack glanced at her, then continued, "In my opinion, that may not be the case."
Confused, Roxanne thought he implied Lucian wasn't the mastermind. "Mr. Damaris, you thinkโฆ" She stopped, noticing Jack's inscrutable expression.
Their eyes met, silencing Roxanne, her heart sinking. Jack spoke slowly, "I'm more inclined to believe Mr. Farwell acted against Herbscape because of me."
Roxanne was astonished. After a moment, she asked, "Why? Because Damaris Group previously took Herbscape from him?"
Jack noted the shift in her expression and smiled wryly. "Ms. Jarvis, after everything we've been through, are you still playing coy?"
Jack's gaze made Roxanne feel guilty, yet she was unsure what he meant. Unable to answer, she stared blankly.
"I'd wager a smart person could see how much Mr. Farwell cares about you," Jack said, a bitter smile twisting his lips. He shook his head. "Initially, I assumed my conflict with Mr. Farwell was purely business. But last night, I thought of you."
He looked away, took a sip of coffee. Roxanne shuddered. So, Lucian's actions involve me? Butโฆ
While Roxanne struggled to dismiss the idea, Jack's voice cut through her thoughts.
"It's true our work has brought us closer recently. I can't blame Mr. Farwell for misinterpreting our relationship." He offered a calm, yet feigned, grin. "Nevertheless, I now hold a grudge against Mr. Farwell because of this."
Roxanne finally recovered, forcing a weak smile. "You must be mistaken, Mr. Damaris. My relationship with Mr. Farwell isn't what you thinkโฆ"
She started to explain, but a strange gleam in Jack's eyes interrupted her.
"Perhaps you're the only one who thinks that way," he said.
Roxanne was stunned. For a moment, his gaze and tone almost convinced her. Does the incident at Herbscape Group really have something to do with me?
