Chapter 853: Sore Spot
โMommyโฆโ Bennyโs voice trembled. โDo I have to have surgery?โ
Roxanne nodded earnestly. โYour acute appendicitis will worsen if you donโt, and youโll be in even more pain. Iโm worried about you.โ
Benny hesitated, slowly removing his hand from his stomach. โMommy, Iโm feeling much better. Iโm perfectly fine now. Letโs not go, please?โ
Roxanne shook her head.
Archie and Benny exchanged fearful glances. Archie tugged at Roxanneโs shirt. โMommy, weโre both sorry for lying. I asked Benny to pretend. Please donโt take him for surgery.โ
Benny joined him, standing before Roxanne with a guilty expression.
Roxanne sighed, ruffling their hair. โHave you learned from your mistake?โ
They nodded quickly.
She crouched to their level. โCan you tell me why you lied?โ
Archie and Benny exchanged glances, speechless. Roxanne waited patiently.
โBecauseโฆ we donโt like Mr. Damaris,โ Benny admitted hesitantly, watching Roxanne closely.
Surprise flickered in Roxanneโs eyes. Sheโd assumed theyโd pretended to be ill to prevent her from leaving. This was the second time sheโd heard them express dislike for someoneโpreviously, it had been Aubree.
She couldn't understand why they disliked Jack, who had always been kind to them.
โWhy donโt you like Mr. Damaris?โ Roxanne asked, puzzled.
Benny and Archie pursed their lips. โNo idea. We just donโt like him.โ
Roxanne frowned. โYou canโt say that. You have to give me a reason. Otherwise, I wonโt be able to decline Mr. Damarisโ kind offers on your behalf in the future.โ
Benny lowered his head. They couldnโt reveal their true reason: that Jack might steal Roxanne from Lucian.
Roxanne tried Archie.
He said innocently, โSince you met Mr. Damaris, youโve spent much less time with us. It happened yesterday and today.โ
His words struck a chord. Roxanne had been busy with work since meeting Jack and had neglected her children. Lucian had even confronted her about it the day before. She felt immediate remorse and believed Archieโs words.
โMommy, can you stay and accompany us today?โ The childrenโs plea tugged at her heart.
