Chapter 862: Do You Like Her a Lot?

โ€œIs that true?โ€ James looked down at the girl in his arms. Estella shook her head vigorously. Lucianโ€™s explanation wasnโ€™t the whole story; Estellaโ€™s distress ran deeper.

James turned to Lucian, a helpless expression on his face. โ€œIf youโ€™re going to be so secretive, I wonโ€™t be able to help.โ€

Lucian was bewildered. He hadnโ€™t been secretive; those were the only explanations he could think of. Yet, Jamesโ€™s words implied heโ€™d missed something. Lucian began to think hard.

Estella remained in Jamesโ€™s arms, her back to Lucian, her body seemingly resisting her father. Suddenly, Lucian remembered Estella had started crying after something heโ€™d said during their phone call. What had he said?

Seeing his friendโ€™s distress, James frowned. He looked down at Estella. โ€œEssie, what did your daddy do to make you sad? Tell me, and Iโ€™ll punish him for you.โ€ James had always been Estellaโ€™s comfort during her outbursts; she trusted him implicitly.

Estella grumbled, โ€œDaddy doesnโ€™t keep his promises! I only want Ms. Jarvisโ€ฆโ€ She glared at Lucian before hiding again in Jamesโ€™s arms.

James looked meaningfully at Lucian. Since Roxanneโ€™s arrival, Estellaโ€™s autistic symptoms had lessened. Her recent episodes clearly involved Roxanne. What had Lucian done this time?

At Estellaโ€™s words, Lucian recalled his phone conversation. He grimaced. โ€œEssie, I didnโ€™t mean it like that.โ€ Heโ€™d been angry at Roxanne and blurted it out.

Estella remained silent.

โ€œSo, what did you say?โ€ James asked.

โ€œI was angry. I said Roxanne might not be her mother.โ€

Estellaโ€™s wails intensified, punctuated by occasional screams. James and Lucian watched, hearts sinking.

Understanding the cause, James urged Lucian, โ€œI get it. You should leave.โ€ Estellaโ€™s anger was directed at Lucian; his presence would only escalate the situation. Trusting James implicitly, Lucian left without a word.

James struggled to calm the struggling girl. โ€œYour daddyโ€™s gone. Look, itโ€™s just us now.โ€ He stood, carrying Estella, and walked around the room, pointing out small changes and asking if she noticed them. Estella responded, but her tears continued.

Finally, James sat down and spoke gently. โ€œEssie, do you like Ms. Jarvis a lot?โ€

More tears flowed, but Estella nodded firmly. James wiped her tears. โ€œHow about your daddy? Do you not like him anymore?โ€
