Chapter 908: Senior Employee

In the research area, researchers, having regained their composure after the earlier fire, resumed their work. The sight of two approaching figures caused them to stop in unison.

Roxanne, with a grim expression, surveyed the room. "Did anyone come to the research institute yesterday afternoon?" she asked.

The surveillance cameras were unfortunately down, leaving Roxanne to speculate about a possible visitor. Her question prompted a silent exchange of glances. Yesterday was Sundayโ€”a day for rest. Why would anyone come to the institute without reason, especially given the fire's connection to her inquiry? And even if someone had been there, would they admit it?

Roxanneโ€™s demeanor hardened. "I have no desire to suspect anyone," she stated, her gaze sweeping across the room, "nor can I imagine why an employee would do this. However, the culprit is from within. Please come forward and avoid causing further trouble."

She added coldly, "The fire caused significant losses. If I discover the responsible party, charges will be filed. However, thereโ€™s still room for negotiation if that person comes forward now."

The researchers lowered their heads under her intense gaze. A heavy silence fell, broken only by the bubbling of liquids in the lab.

Colby cleared his throat, attempting to break the tension. One male employee visibly shuddered, though Roxanne, her attention on Colby, didn't notice.

Colby began slowly, "I've been hiding something. After hearing you, I must reveal itโ€”for that person's sake." He looked at each researcher, his quiet words carrying clearly.

His admission stunned the room. The possibility of an inside job became horrifyingly real. Researchers exchanged nervous glances, suspicion filling the air. Tension mounted within minutes.

Roxanneโ€™s heart sank, but she controlled her anger, waiting for Colby to expose the culprit. She yearned to know the identity of the person responsible for such a heinous act.

Colby cleared his throat again, as if giving the culprit one last chance. "Yesterday afternoonโ€”" he began, but a commotion erupted among the employees. His words trailed off as everyone turned towards the disturbance.

"It's me," a thin man announced, stepping forward with an apologetic expression. Jason.

Astonishment rippled through the room. Murmurs of disbelief arose. "Jason? How could it be? He's worked here for almost a decade, contributed so much..."

Roxanne, too, was shocked. "I haven't been here long, but I know everyone. He's an experienced, seemingly honest employee. I can't comprehend this."
