Chapter 941: Felt Like Food Poisoning
Fortunately, Lucian had packed professional camping equipment for Estella before their trip. Roxanne hadn't initially thought they'd need it. Who knew it would be crucial to saving the children's lives?
After locating the small pot Lucian had prepared, Roxanne emerged from the tent. She poured water into it, added herbs and two leaves, and brought the mixture to a boil.
While waiting, Roxanne carried Benny and Estella back into the tent. Overwhelmed by pain, their eyes were vacant, and their foreheads beaded with sweat. She covered them with clothes, stroked their heads, and whispered, "Just bear with it a little longer. You'll feel better soon."
They nodded weakly, too weak to speak. After settling them, Roxanne stepped outside, only to feel her stomach churning. She'd taken a sip of Archie's water; the pain, though present, was still manageable.
Ignoring her discomfort, she checked on the medicine. Archie was tending the fire, ensuring the mixture boiled properly. Seeing her approach, he anxiously asked, "Mommy, will Benny and Essie get better after drinking this?"
A fleeting, worried expression crossed Roxanne's face before she shook her head. "No," she replied dejectedly. "It will only lessen their pain." A full recovery required more herbs, some only obtainable from the research institute. In their current state, they couldn't endure the pain until returning.
Archie's face fell. "How are they feeling now?" he asked, regaining his composure.
Roxanne's gaze softened at his concern. She sat beside him, and he shifted to give her space. She patted his head. "You keep asking about Benny and Essie, but what about yourself? You drank that water too. How are you feeling?"
Though Archie's symptoms were less severe, she worried. After a moment, he replied, "My stomach aches a little, and I feel a bit sick, but it's just like a normal stomachache, from food poisoning." It mirrored Roxanne's own discomfort.
She sighed in relief. "You should have some medicine, too, when it's ready."
He nodded obediently. From the tent came Benny and Estella's intermittent cries of pain, tightening Roxanne's chest. All she could do was hope the medicine would be ready soon.
Half an hour later, the concoction wasn't quite ready. Using it now might lessen its effectiveness, but the children couldn't wait. Roxanne took four cups, dispensing some medicine for herself and each child. Archie drank his; Roxanne took hers before bringing the remaining cups to Benny and Estella.
Curled in pain, they weakly glanced at her as she entered. They looked like injured animals, evoking pity. Roxanne rushed to them, taking Estella firstโshe was a girl, and having drunk the most water, was suffering more than Benny.
