Chapter 977: Guilty

โ€œBe good, Essie. Let me carry you. Donโ€™t cry,โ€ Sonya comforted patiently. However, her consolation only intensified Estellaโ€™s crying; the child was sobbing so hard she could barely breathe.

Seeing the situation escalate, Sonya reluctantly handed Estella to Lucian. The wails subsided, gradually softening into whimpers in Lucianโ€™s embrace. The moment Lucian saw Estellaโ€™s distress, he understood. He wondered what drastic measures his mother had taken to remove Essie from Roxanneโ€™s care.

โ€œYouโ€™ve spoiled her,โ€ Sonya complained. โ€œDonโ€™t you remember how heartless that woman was? Why do you still want Essie near her? Iโ€™ve told you countless times to stay away! Why wonโ€™t you listen? Are you happy now? Essie doesnโ€™t even want to come home!โ€

Estella didnโ€™t understand the nuances of Sonyaโ€™s words, but sensed her mother was disparaging Roxanne to Lucian. Tugging at Lucianโ€™s shirt, she whined, โ€œI want Ms. Jarvisโ€ฆโ€

Sonyaโ€™s anger flared. โ€œWhy would you want her? She didnโ€™t evenโ€”โ€

Lucian cut her off. โ€œCatalina, take Essie upstairs.โ€

Catalina quickly approached and offered Estella her arms. Unsure whether Estella, still shaken from her earlier crying fit, would cooperate, Catalina was relieved when Estella, weary of Sonyaโ€™s accusations, readily accepted her embrace.

Catalina felt a pang of helplessness and sorrow as she held the silently weeping child. This was clearly an adult dispute; why involve Estella?

Sonya, momentarily stunned by Lucianโ€™s demeanor, recovered only after Catalina had taken Estella away. It was obvious Lucian didnโ€™t want Essie to hear their argument.

Sonyaโ€™s expression darkened. โ€œShouldnโ€™t Essie know? Why did you send her upstairs? Are you going to hide the truth forever? Sheโ€™ll find out eventually. Do you think sheโ€™ll accept that the woman she loves abandoned her at birth?โ€

Sonyaโ€™s stubbornness was infuriating. โ€œAs I said, there are misunderstandings. I havenโ€™t figured them out yet.โ€

His motherโ€™s biased pronouncements followed. โ€œWhat misunderstandings? The truth is before our eyes! Unlike Roxanne, Aubreeโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll judge Aubree myself,โ€ Lucian interrupted coldly. He knew letting her continue would only result in a recitation of Aubreeโ€™s virtues.

Sonya frowned, wanting to retort, but Lucianโ€™s changed demeanor stopped her. He stared at her grimly. โ€œAnd you? You knew Essieโ€™s condition, yet used extreme measures to take her from Roxanne. Did you consider that her condition could deteriorate at any time?โ€

Sonya had heard similar concerns from Roxanne, but dismissed them. Perhaps she simply refused to acknowledge Roxanneโ€™s care for Estella. Only now, confronted by Lucian's words, did she seem to grasp the gravity of her actions and feel the weight of her guilt.
