Chapter 995: Full of Worry

When they returned home, Archie and Benny wanted to cheer Roxanne up, but she didn't give them the chance, heading straight for the study. Seeing her retreating figure, they felt disappointed and worried, suspecting something had happened at Lucian's house that they didn't know about.

Roxanne closed the study door, a conflicted expression on her face as she sat at her desk. The truth was, she had no work; it was a last-minute excuse. She replayed the scene of Lucian and Aubree together, a strange ache tugging at her heart. What's wrong with me? she wondered. She knew Lucian was using her in business, his earlier pursuit merely words, yet her heart ached seeing him with another woman.

Roxanne didn't know how to reconcile this version of herself. A ringing phone broke her reverie. It was Jack. Why is he calling so late? she thought. "Mr. Damaris, what's the matter?"

Jack's voice was gentle. "Did I interrupt your rest?"

Roxanne bit her lip. "No. I just got home." Relieved, Jack changed the subject. "I heard from Dr. Galloway that the medicinal herbs from Herbscape Group were also destroyed in the fire at the research institute."

Roxanne was startled. She hadn't expected Colby to tell Jack.

Jack continued, "I've found another way to obtain more. I'll send them tomorrow."

Roxanne frowned, instinctively refusing. "Since they were destroyed at our research institute, we'll find a way ourselves." This batch was crucial for a project. Jack had previously secured a batch, but the fire had destroyed it. Logically, they should be responsible for procuring a replacement.

Jack didn't mind. "As long as the project succeeds, it's just a batch of herbs. Don't worry about it."

Roxanne still felt guilty. "But..." Jack had already invested heavily in Herbscape Group; it seemed inappropriate for Damaris Group to continue doing so.

Jack heard her hesitation. He smiled. "Damaris Group originally led this project; you're researchers. It's only right for Damaris Group to cover the costs. If you still feel guilty, how about you treat me to lunch?"

With his explanation, Roxanne had no reason to refuse, neither the additional herbs nor lunch. "When are you free, Mr. Damaris?" she asked directly.

Jack was surprised by her quick agreement, silent for a moment before replying, "I'm free anytime."

Roxanne considered, then suggested, "Since you're sending the herbs, how about tomorrow?"

Jack readily agreed. They chatted for a while before ending the call.

It was late, and Roxanne remembered her work. She calmed herself and left the study. Opening the door, she saw Archie and Benny standing outside, their worried faces evident.
