Listen to this chapter:

Cansington, the capital of medicine, contributed to 80 percent of the world's pharmaceutical production. Billions of dollars worth of pharmaceutical companies and thousands of medicinal processing factories, both large and small, were located there. Pharmacies were ubiquitous, lining major roads and tucked away in small alleys.

Nine Dragons Street, a chaotic thoroughfare in the heart of Cansington, was a haven for criminals. Antique stores, bars, pubs, and massage parlors lined the street. At one end stood Common Clinic, where Henry had found refuge. Having worked alongside James, a doctor, for years, Henry possessed basic medical skills; he could treat the flu, colds, and minor injuries.

In Common Clinic's small operating room, James examined Thea. Her face was bleeding, her knees scraped, and her flesh embedded with debris; she had been severely tortured. Exhausted and hemorrhaging, she fainted.

A look of stark terror crossed James's face. As he cradled Thea, his hardened expression softened, revealing shame. Tears streamed down his face. He had promised to protect her, and he had failed. He felt an overwhelming debt to her, one he could never repay. The thought of what might have happened if he had been even slightly later was unbearable.

Even killing Trent Xavier did little to quell his rage. He would make the Xaviers pay far more dearly for what they had done to Thea. He grabbed a medical kit and carefully cleaned Thea's wounds.

"General Xavier, it wasn't me! I didn't do anything! Please let me go" Thea cried out as James accidentally touched her wound, causing her to curl into a fetal position, trembling.

James felt a searing pain. He choked back tears. Quickly drawing a syringe, he injected Thea with a sedative to calm her and numb the pain.

Thea relaxed. James carefully cleaned and bandaged her wounds. Henry returned but remained discreetly out of the way.

After dressing Thea's wounds, James carried her to a small house behind the clinic. He laid her on the bed, covered her with a blanket, and held her hand, never leaving her side. Henry stood guard at the entrance.

Cansington was in shock. In an attempt to rebuild their empire, the Xaviers had staged a fraudulent auction, selling cheap items at exorbitant prices and raising a substantial sum. Trent Xavier even targeted the Callaghans. No one anticipated the reappearance of the masked killer—Warren Xavier's murderer—who assassinated Trent at the auction.

The police launched an investigation, bringing in other authorities due to Trent Xavier's prominence. There were no further updates. The night passed quietly.
