Gladys asked again, "Dad, are you sure Mr. Caden, not Mr. Watson, sent the gifts?" She still believed Zavier, not the man Thea had saved ten years ago, was the sender of the betrothal gifts.
Lex smoked his pipe and nodded. "Yes, it was Mr. Caden. It seems to be the man Thea saved ten years ago. The gifts are for Thea."
"I can't accept them," Thea quickly refused.
"Of course we're keeping them! Why not?" David exclaimed, immediately standing and picking up the limited-edition Firarre sports car keys from the gift box. "It doesn't matter if it's Mr. Caden or Mr. Watson; if they're for Thea, they belong to our family."
"What are you doing? Put them down! We haven't figured it out yet! How could they be for Thea? They're surely for Megan!" Tommy protested.
"Nonsense! They're for Thea! We're taking them!" Gladys shouted.
Megan stood up abruptly. "You're the one spouting nonsense! Thea's married! Who would be so stupid as to send her such luxurious betrothal gifts?"
The family erupted into another argument over the gifts.
James, watching them, had a headache. He thought, "How big a deal is this? Is this much fighting necessary?" He turned and left the house.
Thea's face was pale; she knew James was angry. She wanted to follow him but didn't.
Outside, James lit a cigarette and called Newton. "Mr. Caden," he said.
"Mr. Quinn, I need your help," Caden replied.
"Go ahead, Mr. Caden."
James explained the Callahan family's situation. "You need to tell them Mr. Caden gave Thea the betrothal gift."
"Alright, I'll come right away."
James hung up. He had no choice. He'd simply wanted to give Thea gifts to make her happy. He never anticipated this chaos, especially the reappearance of Mr. Caden from ten years ago. He decided to let the misunderstanding continue. He was repaying a debt; as long as Thea was happy, the sender didn't matter. He could reveal his identity later, if Thea liked him.
James smoked another cigarette before re-entering the noisy house. Gladys insisted the gifts belonged to her family; Tommy, Megan, and Jolie claimed them for themselves. The argument raged on. Lex, unsure what to do, sat on the sofa, smoking his pipe, lost in thought.
Thea rushed to James, taking his hand. "Darling, where were you? I don't know this Mr. Caden. The gifts are probably from some rich young man interested in Megan, not me."
James smiled. "It's a bit stuffy in there. I just went for a walk." He wanted to tell Thea everything, but things had gone awry. He'd intended to repay her for saving his life, silently remaining by her side to protect her. He wouldn't have resigned from the Southern Plains if he'd planned to approach Thea as the Black Dragon.
He was still investigating the mysterious force connected to his family: the Ancient Four, and the family's mysterious treasure map, "Moonlit Flowers on Cliffside's Edge." He didn't know the Ancient Four's strength, but knew one of the Five Commanders was a member; it would be troublesome if they were enemies. Therefore, he couldn't reveal his identity or involve Thea.
