Chapter 155: The First Person to Openly Challenge Law Enforcement
“What crime are you referring to?” Vivienne asked steadily. “If this concerns the kidnapping, I’ve already explained everything to Walter. If you have doubts, address them to him.”
As she finished, Walter calmly produced the recording Vivienne had provided. One interrogator slammed a fist on the table. “Enough diversions! This isn't about a kidnapping—we’re investigating your involvement in illegal dealings with two known suspects. The evidence is overwhelming.”
His eyes fixed on hers. “We’ve traced smuggling and forgery operations linked to Timeless Treasures, your business. These suspects claim you directed their activities and pressured them into compliance. Confess now, and the court may be lenient. Otherwise, you’ll spend your best years in prison.”
Vivienne smirked at the female interrogator. “Why would I confess to something I didn’t do?” Her tone was casual, almost mocking. “Their statements alone constitute proof? Don’t you distinguish lies from facts?”
The room fell silent. Vivienne was the first to openly challenge law enforcement in this manner. Was she unafraid of public backlash? Of the live-streaming audience?
Milo checked his phone; the comments section was a torrent of scornful remarks. The sheer volume was overwhelming. He read comments such as, “Who does she think she is? She’s too cocky!” and “Just lock her up already!”
Looking back at Vivienne, poised and unwavering, Milo felt unease. How had he missed her audacity? Despite powerful backing, and given the cameras and reporters, she should have shown more civility. The pen of the media was sharper than any blade. Even if proven innocent, her defiance would fuel controversy. Would Derek intervene?
He glanced at Derek, expecting indignation. Instead, Derek smiled—was that… pride? His reactions regarding Vivienne were increasingly irrational.
Natalie watched the livestream, a smirk playing on her lips. “Unbelievable. She’s reckless.” To challenge law enforcement so brazenly—did Vivienne have a death wish? Most people would feign humility, but not her. Her arrogance practically begged for a backlash, making Natalie's job easier. No need for online trolls; Vivienne was destroying her own reputation. This time, Vivienne was cornered.
Satisfied, Natalie started her car. Then, a sleek black Audi skidded to a stop before the police station. A middle-aged man emerged, his graying hair not softening his commanding presence. Behind him, officials in crisp uniforms exuded authority.
Natalie hesitated, her grip tightening on the steering wheel. Who were they? After a moment, she turned off the ignition. Something felt wrong. Without hesitation, she stepped out and followed them inside.
