Chapter 240: Are You Questioning My Authority?

“I see…” Caleb drawled, the words stretching out as if a sudden realization had dawned on him. “Ah, is this the same Mitchell family that clawed its way back to power—with a little help from a woman?”

“Exactly,” Austin replied, swirling the wine in his glass.

He’d long observed Derek’s growing interest in Vivienne, but hadn’t anticipated him causing trouble for the Mitchells on her behalf. He seemed truly smitten.

Caleb frowned, confused. “What kind of grudge does Derek have against the Mitchells?” In the business world, they were hardly equals. Logically, there was no reason for conflict.

Austin smirked knowingly. Given Caleb’ temperament, the idea of Derek acting out of love for a woman likely baffled him. But Austin wouldn't explain.

“Don’t overthink it,” he said, patting Caleb’ shoulder firmly. “Just focus on your tasks.” Perhaps Derek would introduce Vivienne to them soon.

The properties Harrison owned occupied prime locations, and offers poured in the moment they were listed. This resolved the compensation issue, but the southern district land remained a problem, forcing Harrison and Melissa to contact Warren.

“Warren, I know how much the southern district project means to you, but Diana is your sister,” Melissa pleaded, her voice trembling. “She’s Mitchell family, your blood. Her success or failure affects us all—you know that better than anyone.”

Warren clenched his jaw, teeth grinding. Vivienne had cornered him. The southern district project was crucial to the Mitchell Group's strategy this year. Success there would dramatically increase their influence in Lyhaton.

Giving up the land meant forfeiting their only chance against Brighton Group. His family's legacy weighed against his sister's fate. There was no easy choice.

Warren's silence sent a wave of panic through Melissa. “Warren, Diana is your sister! How can you let her go to jail? If she's locked up, I… I can’t live!”

Her sobs only increased Warren’s irritation. Pressing his fingers to his temples, he exhaled sharply. “Tell Vivienne—I’ll agree to her terms!”

He ended the call abruptly, unwilling to say more. Alone in his office, he leaned back, gazing out at the city lights. He lit a cigarette in silence.

A knock interrupted him. His assistant entered. “Mr. Mitchell, Mr. Archer and the board members are waiting.”

Warren's pupils darkened. He knew why they were there: answers and accountability. Snuffing out his cigarette, he straightened. “Alright.”

As expected, the boardroom was filled with stern faces, Calan Archer leading the group.

“Mr. Mitchell, we expect an explanation,” Calan stated coldly. “After Miss Hayes's departure, the company is in crisis. A coincidence?”

He leaned forward, his gaze sharp. “Your personal affairs have thrown the company into chaos. Our operations are suffering, the stock market has fallen. If you can’t separate business from pleasure, perhaps we need new leadership.”

Warren’s expression hardened. His voice was icy calm. “Mr. Archer, are you questioning my authority?”
