Chapter 274: Vivienne’s Cunning Nature
Evidence suggested Jacob had been hiding his true identity, all the while keeping a close watch on Vivienne. They needed to take measures to prevent any potential threats. But when Milo voiced his concerns, Derek dismissed them, saying, “Let’s keep this under wraps for now.”
Milo was taken aback. He had always believed that Vivienne’s safety was Derek’s utmost concern. Yet, before he could further contemplate, Derek decisively ordered, “Arrange for our team to guard her.”
“Understood, Mr. Hopkins,” Milo responded.
Vivienne had planned to use her week off to spend time with Derek. But an unexpected business trip had taken him away, leaving her to fend for herself. She lay listlessly in bed, passing the time by watching video clips. Then, sudden, sharp knocks at her door broke the monotony, each one more insistent than the last.
“Coming!” she called out, throwing on a jacket as she left her bedroom and opened the door with a trace of impatience. Her irritation was evident when she saw Owen standing there. “What brings you here?”
“Have you had breakfast yet?” Owen asked as he presented a set of food boxes, adding, “I picked up some egg tarts from Jennifer’s Bakery. They’re your favorite, still warm and soft. Go ahead, eat.”
Vivienne raised an eyebrow slightly. “Did you come all this way just to bring me breakfast?”
“It’s also my mom’s birthday celebration tonight. You didn’t forget, did you?” Owen inquired.
“I have her gift ready,” Vivienne replied as she headed to the bathroom to freshen up.
Exiting the bathroom, she noticed Owen examining the tiara with keen interest. Vivienne rushed over. “Please, put that down!”
Owen laughed off her anxiety. “Is that really necessary? It’s hardly a relic.” He observed as Vivienne carefully placed the tiara back into its case. “I heard the news that last night, a wealthy idiot paid billions for a tiara replica. I didn’t expect you to be that rich fool.”
Vivienne was at a loss for words. “Be straight with me. Is there a hidden treasure map inside?” Owen asked, his curiosity piqued. He was well aware that Vivienne wouldn’t make a losing bet. Given the huge sum she’d spent on the tiara, Owen suspected it harbored some secret value.
Vivienne took a large bite of an egg tart and responded with a flat, “No comment.” Owen didn’t push further. Instead, he sighed casually. “Well, about that matter you wanted me to look into…”
Vivienne’s interest was piqued immediately. “What have you uncovered?”
Owen raised his eyebrow, smiling mischievously. “No comment.” Vivienne found herself speechless. Her faint smile sent chills down Owen’ spine. Despite her seemingly delicate demeanor, Owen was aware of her cunning nature. He suspected she had plans in place that would make his life exceedingly difficult.
Unable to contain himself, Owen finally answered, “I’ve reorganized the timeline of the entire incident and came across some leads. Remember the widely publicized shootout in Forestvale five years ago? That night, a group appeared, apparently searching for someone. They intended to ensnare their quarry in a trap, but their plans backfired disastrously. I’m convinced the individual who rescued you that night was their actual target.”
“And then?” Vivienne’s brow creased with concern.
