Chapter 46

“What’s happening?” Warren’s brow furrowed with concern.

On the other end of the line, Natalie’s voice trembled. “I don’t know. The new CEO of Sinclair Group thinks I don’t fit the image anymore. Everything was set. We were supposed to sign the contract this afternoon, and now I have nothing.”

Warren understood the importance of being Sinclair Group’s spokesperson, even without Natalie’s further explanation. He had counted on her endorsement to boost Mitchell Group’s visibility. Who could have predicted this last-minute reversal due to the new CEO’s decision?

His expression darkened, but he spoke softly. “It’s just an endorsement. Don’t lose hope. Something better will come along.”

“But I’m really upset,” Natalie admitted, her voice heavy with disappointment.

“I’ve made reservations at your favorite restaurant for tonight. How about I pick you up later?” Warren suggested.

“Really?” Natalie’s voice brightened instantly, excitement cutting through her sadness. “That’s perfect! Let’s meet at Lonsong Restaurant tonight!”

“Sounds good.”

After hanging up, his demeanor shifted. His gentle expression hardened into steely resolve as he turned to his assistant. “I want a full report on the new CEO of Sinclair Group. Everything there is to know—right now.”

“Yes, sir.” The assistant nodded and left without hesitation.

Unaware of the brewing storm, Vivienne remained busy at her desk, poring over documents. Her phone buzzed, displaying an unknown number. She hesitated, frowning slightly before answering. “Hello?”

“Vivienne, it’s Margot,” a familiar voice said. “Can you hear me?”

Her eyes softened, a subtle smile playing on her lips. “Hello, Margot. How are you?”

“I’m fine—just the usual aches and pains that come with age,” Margot said lightly. Then, her voice took on a motherly concern. “But what about you? I heard you’ve started a new position. Are you settling in alright?”

Though Margot didn’t specify her source, Vivienne thought of Derek’s striking face. The thought sent a flutter through her chest.

“I am,” she replied, keeping her tone measured.

Margot sighed sympathetically, her warmth evident. “That’s good to hear. But remember, no matter how busy you are, your health comes first. It’s late—have you had anything to eat?”

Vivienne froze. The thought of Derek waiting for her surfaced abruptly. Was he already at the restaurant? Was he still waiting?

She took a slow breath, steadying herself. “Thank you for your concern. I’ll grab something after work. You take care of yourself, too.”

Margot chuckled softly. “You’re so thoughtful, unlike Derek. That boy is so busy these days, I barely see him. He’s not even coming home for dinner again tonight. I wonder what’s keeping him so occupied.”

Vivienne’s heart ached at Margot’s casual mention of Derek. But Margot continued, her tone light. “Anyway, I won’t keep you. Get back to work, dear.”

“Alright.” Vivienne ended the call.

But when she turned back to her work, she couldn’t focus. Her thoughts drifted to Derek, and the possibility of him waiting gnawed at her mind.

Moments later, Scarlett entered. Her sharp eyes caught Vivienne’s restlessness. “You seem distracted,” she observed gently, setting a file on the desk. “If you’re struggling to concentrate, why not leave early and take a breather?”

Vivienne looked up, her lips pressing into a faint line as she weighed the suggestion. Finally, she stood and grabbed her bag. “Let’s go home.”

As the car drove through the city, they passed Lonsong Restaurant. Vivienne’s gaze lingered on the glowing sign, her thoughts swirling. On a sudden impulse, she spoke. “Stop the car.”
