Chapter 103
The Vanderbilts argued over who should watch Paul overnight. Dominick cut them short. "I'll stay. No need for anyone else."
Marissa protested instantly. "Dom, you can't! You have that board meeting."
Dominick shook his head. "It can wait."
Marissa felt uneasy leaving him and Paisley alone. She blurted, "Look, I'll stay! It'll be more practical, two women."
"No need," Dominick said, walking into Paul's room, effectively dismissing the family.
Paisley ignored the commotion. Exhausted, she dumped her backpack in the luxurious VIP room and collapsed onto the sofa, instantly asleep. Her head drooped, her elegant neck exposed beneath her messy ponytail. Long lashes fluttered, hinting at restless sleep.
Dominick found her like that. He watched her silently. She stirred, sensing a touch, her eyes snapping open as he reached to help her lie down. The room held only their breath.
"If you're going to sleep, do it properly," Dominick said, his brow furrowed.
Paisley pushed him away. "Why are you staying?"
His dark laugh surprised her. "Why shouldn't I? That's my grandfather."
"And Marissa is okay with this?" Paisley's voice dripped sarcasm. She knew Marissa wouldn't have allowed it.
"What are you saying?" Dominick frowned.
"Nothing," Paisley retorted, icy calm. "I want a peaceful evening. So keep your distance, both you and your precious Ms. Prescott."
"Paisley, can you try not being difficult?" Dominick’s frustration grew.
"I'm perfectly reasonable," she said, her calm infuriating him.
He moved to the far couch, Paul’s bed between them. "Happy now? Is this far enough?"
Paisley didn’t respond, closing her eyes. Silence settled between them, heavy and unspoken.
Later, a well-groomed doctor entered. He nodded to Dominick, then approached Paisley. "Ms. Sutton, Mr. Walsh asked me to check on you. Do you need anything?"
