Chapter 116
Two days later, the Crown & Culture charity auction buzzed with anticipation. High-profile guests filled the hall, eager to contribute and catch a glimpse of Nion, making their first public appearance.
Paisley and Lucy arrived early. Only a few organizers and representatives from remote villages were present. Janet, the magazine's editor-in-chief, greeted them warmly.
"Ms. Green, you're here early!"
Lucy smiled. "Nion suggested we leave early to avoid traffic, but we didn't need to."
Janet glanced around. "Where's Nion?"
Lucy gestured to Paisley. "Right here."
Janet's eyes widened. "So Nion is a lady?" She laughed, extending a hand. "Sorry, Nion. I was wrong."
Paisley chuckled. "Some call me Mr. Vaire, others Nion. It's my pen name."
Janet led Paisley inside. "I have things to attend to. Make yourself comfortable."
The auction hall was vast. Paisley found her seat, then noticed a group of children from a remote village at a nearby table. A little girl, her best clothes worn but clean, looked frightened and lost in the bustling crowd. Several other girls, all thin and pale, sat with two adults, likely their teachers. Their eyes, though, held an untarnished innocence.
Paisley joined them. The teachers, nervous but welcoming, offered her juice. They didn't know who she was, but sensed her influence. Their hope for books, clothes, and sanitary supplies for the children was palpable.
Paisley smiled, accepting the juice. "Thank you."
The teachers visibly relaxed. Janet was already at the entrance, greeting guests. Kayla and Marissa arrived last.
Janet approached with a respectful smile. "Ms. Vanderbilt, Ms. Prescott, welcome."
Kayla, ignoring Janet's courtesy, blurted, "Has Mr. Vaire arrived?"
Janet nodded excitedly. "Yes! Nion's here!"
Kayla's face lit up. She hugged Marissa, kissing her cheek. "Marissa, thank you! I'll meet my idol!"
Marissa smiled, a sense of pride welling within her. "I'm glad you're happy." She leaned in, whispering, "I heard Mr. Vaire's painting today is the one you're copying. We'll win it, and then you can get Nion to sign it."
Kayla's eyes widened. Meeting Nion, obtaining her painting, and an autograph – it felt like a dream.
