Chapter 204

"That's my ex-husband," Paisley said, matter-of-factly.

A flicker of apology crossed Max's face. "I'm sorry if I caused a misunderstanding."

"Don't worry. We're long over."

Max nodded, and after a brief chat, drove off.

In the car, Leo leaned forward. "Curious about the guy, huh? Why not ask Maria? She knows him."

Max glared, kicking the seat. "Mind your own business. Finished your tasks?"

Leo straightened instantly. His phone rang. He glanced at Max before answering. He hung up, his face serious. "Someone's been investigating us, Max. The Vanderbilt family."

Max's eyes narrowed. "The Vanderbilts? From Harrowfell?"

"Yes," Leo said, "Dominick, the CEO. He's being blatant about it. It's like a—"

"Warning," Max finished, his suspicion solidifying. He pulled out his phone, finding Dominick's picture. "Damn, boss, you're quick!" Leo exclaimed.

"If you can't compliment properly, don't," Max snapped.

Leo chuckled nervously. "How do we respond?"

Max gazed out the window. "Ignore him."

At Vanderbilt Manor, Dominick scowled at the tablet. Julian’s report showed Max Godard's details. "Montera's Godard family. Tyson's adopted son."

"Married?" Dominick asked.

Julian hesitated. "No, sir. Rumored to be in poor health."

"Poor health," Dominick muttered. Could he even father a child? His brow relaxed upon hearing Max was single. Paisley hadn't given him official status.

Julian, bewildered by Dominick's shifting mood, continued, "He suffered severe injuries years ago, almost died."

"Why didn't he die?" Dominick hissed, almost puncturing the tablet.

Julian stared, speechless.
