Chapter 222
Maria squeezed Serena’s hand, the memory of Serena’s innocent question about illegitimacy fueling a fresh surge of anger towards Lauren. "Alright, Paisy, Max, let's eat," Maria said, arranging the food.
Max stood. "I'm heading out." Maria followed him to the hospital exit. Outside, Dominick waited in his car, reluctant to leave. Only when Max drove away did Dominick finally shift his gaze, instructing Julian, "Two men here, low-key. Keep it from Paisley."
"Got it," Julian replied, then added, "Dom, from what Paisy said, Max is just a neighbor. She wouldn't lie about that, would she?"
Dominick remained silent, his gaze fixed on the road Max had vanished down. He knew men. Max's look at Paisley had held nothing innocent.
In the car, Leo glanced in the rearview mirror at Dominick's departing vehicle before turning back. "Max, we found someone who knows where your sister is. Before she died, she had a close friend—they married and got pregnant around the same time. This friend might know something."
Reginald had rushed Serena's DNA test. By morning, the results sat on his desk. He and Lauren, both sleepless and anxious, stared at the report. Lauren jumped up. "She's our child!"
Reginald confirmed the results, a wide smile splitting his face. He was a grandfather! He declared his intention to announce this to the entire Vanderbilt family and organize a ceremony to formally welcome his granddaughter. He handed the report to Paul. "Dad, a great-granddaughter! Paisley's daughter!"
Paul, unaware of Grayson's incident and having just learned the news, cracked a rare smile. For once, something good in their chaotic family.
Kayla’s voice cut through the joy. "Don't get too excited. Mom called Serena a bastard yesterday. They won't accept us."
Paul exploded. "Lauren! What did you do?"
Lauren stammered, the memory of Serena's hurt face burning her. She wanted to slap herself. "It's Paisley's fault," she mumbled, regret gnawing at her. "Why didn't she say anything?"
Paul slammed his fist on the table. "I don't care what you do, beg or plead! I want to see my great-granddaughter!"
