Chapter 246
Laughter spilled from Serena’s hospital room. Dominick paused outside, recognizing Emery and her boyfriend, Teddy’s voices.
“Don’t make Rena laugh, her wound’ll hurt,” Emery cautioned.
“Sorry, Rena,” Teddy chuckled.
“It’s okay!” Serena’s bright voice chirped. Dominick smiled, his pleasure attracting the attention of passing nurses.
“I like Daddy! I want to play with Daddy!”
Dominick’s smile vanished. Daddy? The nurses, startled by his sudden change, quickly moved on. He remembered Paisley’s explanation: Serena mispronounced Teddy’s name. He’d need to find her a tutor.
He knocked, then entered. Serena’s smile faltered. “Scary man, you’re here again. Mom’s not here.” Paisley was at work.

“I just wanted to see Serena,” he said softly.
“Why? You’re not—” Emery’s words trailed off, her eyes widening. “You know?”
“Yes,” Dominick whispered. “I promised Paisley I wouldn’t reveal myself until she accepts me.”
Maria emerged from the bathroom. Seeing Emery’s questioning look, she nodded. Reassured, Emery stepped aside, her gaze fixed on Serena. Dominick placed a carefully chosen limited-edition doll set beside Serena’s bed.
Serena glanced at it. “Sir, you should take it back.”
“You don’t like it?” Dominick asked, surprised.
Serena shook her head. “I already have one. Mom bought it ages ago. I have lots at home.”
Dominick’s loneliness deepened. “I see.” He sighed. “Tell me what you want. I’ll get it for you.”
Emery watched, touched by the humble man before her.
Serena shook her head again. “No, I don’t need anything. Mom said not to take things from others. You already gave me a gift.”
Serena’s words struck Dominick like a blow. “Rena, I’m not just anyone, I—”
