Chapter 253
Gregory and Christina arrived at Byron’s secluded estate at ten sharp, their breath catching in their throats at the sheer opulence. This wasn’t just a house; it was a palace, a world away from their modest villa, a world they feared they might soon lose.
A servant led them through breathtaking gardens, a dizzying display of wealth and beauty. They reached a stately building, where a sharp-eyed man blocked their path.
“Where’s Brittany?” he demanded, his frown deepening.
Gregory’s jaw clenched. He’d spent the night pleading with the Levine family, begging them to release Brittany, only to be met with a slammed door. Christina, who’d initially urged him against it, now remained silent. He’d risked everything for this meeting, betting their future on Byron’s acceptance.
“Brittany’s on a short trip,” Gregory said smoothly, “something unexpected came up.”
“We have the adoption papers and photos,” Christina interjected quickly, producing the documents and a picture of Brittany.
Dylan, the gatekeeper, nodded curtly. “Follow me.”
They entered a sunlit room where an imposing figure sat, his gaze piercing. Christina visibly trembled; Gregory felt a cold sweat prickle his skin.
“You’re Brittany’s adoptive parents?” Byron’s voice was deep, resonant with authority.
“Yes, sir,” Gregory managed, his voice barely a whisper.
“Why only two of you?” Byron repeated the question.
Dylan relayed Gregory’s explanation. Gregory held his breath, expecting recrimination. Instead, Byron simply asked, “Why is she upset?”
Christina stammered, “Just a little disagreement with friends.”
Byron nodded, unfazed. “Let me see what you have.”
Relief flooded Gregory. Christina presented the documents and the photograph. Byron barely glanced at the papers, his attention fixed on the picture.
“This is Brittany’s latest photo,” Christina explained.
He studied the photo, a long silence hanging in the air before he finally spoke. “She resembles Enya… a little.” He looked at Christina, recognition dawning in his eyes. “You… you must know Enya, right?”
Christina gasped, the long-forgotten name a shock to her system.
