Chapter 44

Marissa waited downstairs at Paisley’s, planning a united front with Dominick to collect Grayson. Instead, she found Paisley and Grayson already there. Grayson, trusting and expectant, walked beside Paisley. Marissa’s leverage with Dominick rested on Grayson’s attachment to her; losing that meant losing the marriage. Spotting Grayson, she called his name.

He ran to her. “Did you come to pick me up, Marissa?”

“Yes, sweetie,” Marissa hugged him close, smiling. Then, glancing at Paisley, she added, “Missed me these last few days, Sonny?”

Grayson hesitated, then said, “Yes,” burying his face in her embrace. He hadn’t thought of her much after the first day, but couldn’t risk hurting her. He felt she was like a real mom.

Marissa breathed a silent sigh of relief. His hesitation showed, but his answer was enough. To Paisley, he still seemed close to her. “Been a good boy?” she asked.

Grayson looked unsure. “I… I had a tantrum this morning.” He glanced at Paisley for help.

Paisley’s presence wasn't entirely unexpected. With the upcoming wedding, she understood Marissa collecting Grayson. Watching them, mother and son, stirred no emotion. Four years ago, it would have devastated her. Now, nothing.

Disappointed by Paisley’s lack of reaction, Marissa straightened. “Dom’s coming. Thank you for watching Grayson.”

Paisley raised an eyebrow. “He’s downstairs. I’ll get his things.” The message was clear: Stay put.

Marissa caught the unspoken dismissal but maintained her smile. “Thank you.”

Paisley returned with Grayson's things. "That's all. Goodbye." She felt nothing but disdain for Marissa, and even more for her past self—the one Marissa had broken.

Grayson, seeing Paisley leave, took a step toward her. Marissa's smile vanished. She pulled him back. “Wait in the car, Sonny.” She turned to Paisley. "I need to talk to you."
