Chapter 55
Paisley returned to find several people scattered across the vast riding field. Fortunately, Nathaniel’s VIP access kept her separate. A riding coach, noticing her and her horse, immediately pegged her as a novice. He saw a sale.
While Paisley adjusted the saddle, a handsome coach approached. “Need some help, miss?” he asked, his smile dazzling.
Paisley thought, Wow, even the coaches here are gorgeous. Not like those grim types back at Brightmoor! She politely declined.
He persisted, adjusting her saddle. Paisley let him finish, then firmly took the reins, thanked him, and swung onto the horse. With a flick of the reins, they were off, dust settling on the coach's face.
Ignoring him, Paisley circled the track, then returned to where Serena, bouncing in Maria’s arms, waited impatiently. Paisley lifted Serena onto the saddle.
Holding Serena securely, Paisley walked the horse in slow circles. Serena, thrilled, waved excitedly at Maria, who cheered wildly. Paisley found herself amused and exasperated by their antics.
As they finished another lap, a group approached. Paisley spotted Dominick. Her brow furrowed. If I'd known he'd be here, I never would have come. She gritted her teeth, resolving to endure until the evening gala.
“Mom, why’d we stop?” Serena asked, still eager to ride.
“Want to keep playing?” Paisley asked.
Serena nodded enthusiastically. Paisley loosened the reins, and they continued their slow circles. She decided to ignore the unexpected arrival.
Marissa, meanwhile, couldn't hide her disappointment. She'd meticulously dressed, hoping to amaze Dominick, but he hadn't seemed to notice.
"You look stunning," Alexis said, genuine admiration in her eyes.
Marissa, though used to compliments, knew this was different. It wouldn't be the same if Dominick had said it. "You look great too," she replied warmly.
