Chapter 60
Dominick’s surprise at Paisley’s challenge faded as he saw her overconfidence. The crowd didn’t care that Paisley claimed to know him; their attention focused solely on his reaction.
Karissa rode closer, her voice calm. “Dom, I’ve got this. I won’t let her get hurt. If she wants to race, let’s race.”
Dominick conceded. “Fine, Paisley. Lose, and maybe you’ll learn your limits.” He gave Karissa a curt nod. “Be careful.”
Karissa smiled sweetly at Dominick, then, turning to Paisley, arched a knowing eyebrow. “One lap. Fastest wins. Deal?”
“Deal,” Paisley replied.
Serena, in Mania’s arms, shrieked, “Go, Mommy! You’re the best!” Marissa, watching, subtly gestured to Grayson. He promptly bellowed, “Go, Marissa! I love you! More than anything!”
Marissa smirked, her victory already savored. How does that feel, Paisley? The child you adore prefers me!
Alexis, acting as referee, glared at Paisley before signaling the start. The horses bolted. Marissa shot ahead, leaving Paisley far behind.
Alexis scoffed. “Forget her riding –look at that horse! Worlds better.”
Marissa’s horse, a magnificent steed chosen by Dominick, was a clear advantage over Paisley’s smaller, slower mount. Marissa, glancing back at Paisley’s struggling figure, laughed inwardly. This is all on you, Paisley.
Ahead was Marissa’s taunting; behind, the sneering laughter of the onlookers. Yet, Paisley remained unfazed. She patted her horse’s neck. “Alright, little guy, show them what you’ve got.”
With a squeeze of her legs, the brown horse whinnied and surged forward.
Marissa, initially unchallenged, had merely aimed to humiliate Paisley. But the sound of approaching hooves shattered her complacency. She froze, then glanced back, stunned. Paisley was rapidly gaining ground.
Panic seized Marissa. Before she could react, Paisley swept past, a blur of brown and determination.
