Chapter 49

AIDEN

The flashing lights and the insane number of paparazzi were the first things we noticed upon arrival. I looked at Freya; her eyes were wide as she stared at the entrance. Red carpet and all that. It can be overwhelming, especially the first time.

"You okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine. I just didn't think it would be this big. Why so many paparazzi?" she asked, still staring.

"Well, it's a big event. Lots of important people—business leaders and politicians. That's why I was here; it was an excellent networking opportunity. I needed to speak to several people. If that hadn't been the case, I would have changed our plans the moment Freya walked out of that house looking like a literal goddess."

"Are you ready to go?" I asked, wanting to ensure she was comfortable. If she wasn't, I could ask Chris to drive us home. Actually, that wasn't a bad idea at all; I'd have Freya all to myself

"Yes. Let's get it over with," she muttered, a hint of nervousness in her expression. I tried hard to hide my disappointment. I got out of the car, opened her door, and offered her my hand. Freya took it, smiling up at me. I couldn't help but smile back.

"Are we stopping for pictures?" she asked when we stopped in front of the cameras. I rarely pose for pictures, but today, she was with me, and I wanted to show her off. Everyone needed to know she was off-limits.

"Just a few. Need to tell the world this beautiful woman is all mine." I heard Freya inhale shakily as she looked up at me. The pink tinge on her cheeks was adorable.

"Smile, baby," I whispered in her ear. We posed for a few photos before I guided her inside. The ballroom was a different world: crystal chandeliers, elaborate tapestries, and high-profile guests in shimmering couture gowns and tailored tuxedos.

"Shit! Am I underdressed?" Freya's wide, alarmed eyes met mine. "I look underdressed."

I couldn't see why. She wasn't underdressed; she was perfect. Others were simply overdressed.

I touched a loose curl falling on her face and traced it. "You look absolutely ravishing. You're easily the most gorgeous woman here. I'd bet my fortune on it."

It wasn't just me trying to ease her nerves; it was the truth, reflecting my ever-growing obsession with her. She was beautiful—too beautiful. Having her this close wasn't enough. If I let my compulsive thoughts win, I'd lock myself in a penthouse with her forever, where no one could ever look at her.

Freya gaped at me before lightly shaking her head, trying—and failing—to hide the blush warming her cheeks. "You're well on your way to earning that kiss."

I was having a hard time looking away from her lips when a familiar voice called out,

"Aiden."

"Will," I responded. William Henderson, owner of an e-commerce company that made the Fortune 500 top 10 list this year. I was third, but back to Will—he was as bland as he sounded, with his love of golf and spoiled orange cat. But he was a good man, as good as they come in this field.

He turned to Freya. "And who might this beautiful young lady be?"

"She's my girlfriend, Freya Wilson." I wrapped an arm around her waist, and she leaned on me.

I'd never been to an important political event with a woman before, except for two times with Erica. I was sure this would be in the news tomorrow, and people would be curious about the woman on my arm, but who cared? From now on, Freya would take Chris with her everywhere.

"Nice to meet you," Freya offered, extending her hand. William kissed it instead. I had a strong urge to swat his hand away, but I…

He flashed a charming grin. "The pleasure's all mine, darling. Never thought I'd see the day this guy here dates."

You and me both, Will. I never thought I'd find her, and the thought of dating other women was long gone. Imagine my surprise when I found Freya in the audience at my company's annual function.

Chapter 49 (continued)

I kissed the side of her head. "Couldn't let a woman like her slip through my fingers."

Freya looked up, something sharp in her pretty green eyes. She offered a tender but uncertain smile. Before I could understand that look, she pulled away.

"I'll find the washroom."

Something was definitely wrong. I'd seen this look before. Freya avoided my eyes whenever she was overwhelmed. Her emotions were all over her face.

"I'll come with you," I offered.

"Don't. Stay here, do your thing. I'll be fine." I'd much rather go with her and find out what was troubling her than listen to Will. I figured she needed a moment alone, so I let it go—for the moment.

"Find me if you need anything." I didn't let go of her arm until she nodded in understanding.

"I will."
