Rayna gripped the steering wheel tightly as she drove to the Quinns' house, her mind consumed by rage. The thought of confronting Sandra sent her pulse racing; she imagined countless ways to unleash her fury. Sandra wouldn't get away with what she'd almost done to Rayna and what she'd done to Ethan. This wasn't about Evelyn; it was a personal attack, and Rayna would handle it personally, without waiting for Evelyn and Derek to intervene. She lacked the patience to wait, not for Sandra's punishment, not until morning. The lateness of the hour didn't matter. She'd confront Sandra and give her a beating, instead of enduring the agonizing wait while Ethan underwent surgery. Afterwards, Derek and Evelyn could arrest Sandra—she didn't care if she looked like an accident victim.
As she approached the Quinn house, she saw an ambulance parked at the curb, its lights flashing, illuminating the lawn in bursts of red and blue. Paramedics were loading a stretcher; Eric followed, his face etched with worry. Rayna strained to see who was inside. Her stomach plummeted as the ambulance doors closed and the vehicle sped away, sirens wailing. Her grip loosened; confusion momentarily muted her anger. What was happening? Who was in the ambulance? Why wasn't Sandra's car in the driveway?
Unsure what to do, Rayna sat motionless, watching the ambulance recede. Unanswered questions churned in her mind. She considered following the ambulance or calling Evelyn, but her phone rang. Seeing it was Melvin, her heart sank. She answered, fearing the worst.
"Ethan's out of surgery," Melvin said. Rayna exhaled, the breath she'd been holding.
"Is he okay? What did the doctor say?" she asked rapidly.
"Yes. He hasn't woken yet, but they say he'll be fine," Melvin replied. Relief washed over Rayna.
"I'm coming back," she said, reversing the car. She wanted to be with Ethan when he woke. She'd deal with Sandra later, but hoped Evelyn and Derek would apprehend her first; otherwise, she'd personally exact her revenge.
As Rayna drove off, Sandra stumbled from the Quinns' house. Her eyes were red, her face pale, her hair disheveled. Barefoot and coatless, she dashed down the driveway, clutching her phone, focused solely on reaching the ambulance and her mother. She never intended to hurt her mother; her mother was all the family she had.
Hurrying down the road, she frantically waved at an approaching cab. Her phone rang; in frustration, she threw it down, shattering it on the pavement. That phone had caused her mother's fall.
She didn't care about Evelyn, Michael, or anyone else. Only her mother's well-being mattered. She sprinted, her breath visible in the cold night air. Once in the cab, tears streamed down her face as she prayed for her mother's life, promising to let go of her grudges against Evelyn and Michael, becoming the good daughter her mother wanted.
Meanwhile, Derek's impatience grew. The room was tense as they waited for Sandra's phone to connect. Evelyn, separated from Michael, sat ready, her hair and makeup meticulously applied for their ruse. Her clothes were stained to look like she'd been beaten. She frowned, wondering why Sandra wasn't answering.
The hitman tried calling again, on speakerphone. "Still not connecting," he announced irritably.
Evelyn stood, pacing. "Something's wrong. Maybe she suspects something… or something's happened. I don't think she just fell asleep after what she did to Ethan."
Derek's suspicion grew. "Should we contact your father?"
Evelyn nodded. Derek called Eric. After several rings, Eric answered, his voice strained.
"Eric? What's going on?" Derek asked, hearing muffled sounds.
Eric's response was grim. "I'm in an ambulance. Taking Claire to the hospital… Sandra hurt her."
Derek froze. "Sandra hurt Claire? Her own mother?"
Evelyn snatched the phone, a mix of anger and fear on her face. "Dad? What happened?"
Eric's voice was strained. "Evelyn… Claire's in bad shape. Head injury."
Fury surged through Evelyn. How many more lives would Sandra ruin? "Where are you going? I'm coming."
After learning the hospital's location, Evelyn turned to Derek, her gaze fierce. "I don't care about the plan anymore. Sandra's gone too far. She needs to be stopped. Now."
Derek nodded. "Agreed. Let's go." He addressed the detectives. "This show is over. Some of you take Michael. The rest, come with us to the hospital and get Sandra."
