Chapter 7

I stared at him in disbelief, as if seeing this man for the first time. Pointing at Rachel, I screamed through my tears, “MY karma? The karma is coming for YOU TWO!”

“James, tell me the truth! My babies were perfectly healthy in my womb—why were they suddenly stillborn? And what did you really do with their bodies?!”

James frowned. “Obviously, it’s because of your weak constitution. The problems just weren’t detected while they were inside you. I gave all the babies proper burials. Why are you bringing this up now? Apologize to Rachel immediately!”

I dropped my arm, laughing bitterly at myself. I’d expected this answer, but why did it still hurt so much? I picked up a glass shard from the ground and unflinchingly sliced off my pinky finger. Blood gushed instantly.

“Emily!” James’s eyes widened in shock.

“You’re right, James. Rachel’s hands need to be pristine for the operating room.”

“Her palm has a scratch. I’ll pay for it with my finger. Is that enough?”

With that, I turned and walked away. Watching my retreating figure and the pool of blood on the ground, James felt an unexpected surge of anxiety. He wanted to call after me. But Rachel clung to him. “James, my hand hurts so much…”

After several moments of hesitation, he ultimately didn’t follow me. Before entering the operating room, I received a call from James.

“Emily, how’s your hand? Don’t worry, Rachel’s wound isn’t serious. I was out of line today. I know you’ve always blamed yourself for the babies’ deaths. I shouldn’t have said those things.”

“But I did promise Mom I’d marry Rachel. It’s just for show, but if we postpone the wedding, I’m afraid she’ll be upset. She’s elderly with a weak heart, and I’m concerned…”

I cut him off. “I’m fine. Take good care of her. Don’t worry your mother.”

James chuckled. “Silly Emily, she’s not just my mother—she’s our mother. Trust me, I’ll make her accept you eventually.”

“I’m leaving the country the day after tomorrow. I’ll come home tomorrow to spend time with you. I’ll bring your favorite food. Be good.”

After hanging up, I glanced at the open hospital room next to me. On the TV, a news segment was playing: “Prescott Industries CEO shows extreme devotion to his fiancée. After she suffered a minor cut on her palm, he summoned the nation’s top specialists to treat her. To cheer her up, he spent $30 million at auction on an antique jade beauty tool once owned by a royal concubine.”

I turned to the doctor. “I’m ready. We can proceed now.”
