Seeing Kieran come to Freya’s defense was more than Eloise could stomach. There was a time when Kieran couldn’t stand Freya, and Eloise had front-row seats to that show. Kieran not treating Freya like dirt was already a surprise, let alone speaking up for her. What was happening? Could it be that Kieran was considering marrying Freya?
Meanwhile, finally feeling safe from being followed, Luna sighed with relief. She patted her chest and said, “Thank goodness they didn’t follow! Kieran’s truly something, isn’t he? Bringing a whole entourage like that. You’d have thought they were shooting some Hollywood blockbuster if you hadn’t known better.”
Then, turning to Freya, Luna scolded, “And you! Why did you even bother bailing Kieran out? You should’ve just let him and Eloise go at it. Now, look at what it’s gotten you—everyone’s pointing at you as some seductress after Mr. Sutton. It’s just not worth it.”
“I wasn’t saving Kieran. I was saving myself,” Freya replied.
After learning her lessons the hard way in the past, Freya wanted nothing to do with Kieran. The farther he stayed from her, the better. Besides, wasn’t Kieran all into Eloise? This time, she’d step aside and let these two star-crossed lovers have their moment.
Just then, Freya’s phone rang. Seeing it was Audrey calling, Freya frowned and wondered what Audrey wanted at this time. She picked up and heard Audrey’s cold voice. “Freya, I’m sending the driver to pick you up. We need to talk.”
Audrey’s tone was distant, making Freya reply, “I’m still at school. I can’t leave right now.”
“I’ve spoken with your principal. The driver will be there shortly,” Audrey interrupted, then hung up.
Freya couldn’t help but laugh at herself after the call. “Oh, Freya, you are a fool. You once thought, despite everything, Audrey truly cared for you. Only in this second go-around did you see that everyone in the Sutton family was cut from the same cloth.”
Freya realized that her future grandmother-in-law would never truly care about her—it was all just a game of benefits. With that thought, she turned off her phone.
Sure enough, the Sutton family’s driver arrived promptly. As Freya got into the car, the driver glanced at her through the rearview mirror, his tone impatient. “Ms. Dawson, going off to school without informing Mrs. Sutton? You’ve got us running around like headless chickens.”
Used to the complaints, Freya wasn’t surprised. Working for the Sutton family, these people thought they were above everyone else. Back in the day, Freya was Kieran’s lapdog, always eager to please Kieran, the security, the drivers, and even the servants. So, it wasn’t long before no one took Freya seriously.
Freya replied coldly, “It seems I’ve troubled you.”
Oblivious to the edge in Freya’s voice, the driver continued, “Ms. Dawson, all that book learning is fine and dandy, but it won’t do you any good if you can’t land a good husband. You’re better off spending your time pleasing Mr. Sutton. I’m telling you this for your sake. What’s the use of all that education if you end up alone?”
His words were laced with disdain.
