Escaping the Shadow
Chapter 101
Seeing Kieran come to Freyaโs defense was more than Eloise could stomach. There was a time when Kieran couldnโt stand Freya, and Eloise had front-row seats to that show. Kieran not treating Freya like dirt was already a surprise, let alone speaking up for her. What was happening? Could it be that Kieran was considering marrying Freya?
Meanwhile, finally feeling safe from being followed, Luna sighed with relief. She patted her chest and said, โThank goodness they didnโt follow! Kieranโs truly something, isnโt he? Bringing a whole entourage like that. Youโd have thought they were shooting some Hollywood blockbuster if you hadnโt known better.โ
Then, turning to Freya, Luna scolded, โAnd you! Why did you even bother bailing Kieran out? You shouldโve just let him and Eloise go at it. Now, look at what itโs gotten youโeveryoneโs pointing at you as some seductress after Mr. Sutton. Itโs just not worth it.โ
โI wasnโt saving Kieran. I was saving myself,โ Freya replied.
After learning her lessons the hard way in the past, Freya wanted nothing to do with Kieran. The farther he stayed from her, the better. Besides, wasnโt Kieran all into Eloise? This time, sheโd step aside and let these two star-crossed lovers have their moment.
Just then, Freyaโs phone rang. Seeing it was Audrey calling, Freya frowned and wondered what Audrey wanted at this time. She picked up and heard Audreyโs cold voice. โFreya, Iโm sending the driver to pick you up. We need to talk.โ
Audreyโs tone was distant, making Freya reply, โIโm still at school. I canโt leave right now.โ
โIโve spoken with your principal. The driver will be there shortly,โ Audrey interrupted, then hung up.
Freya couldnโt help but laugh at herself after the call. โOh, Freya, you are a fool. You once thought, despite everything, Audrey truly cared for you. Only in this second go-around did you see that everyone in the Sutton family was cut from the same cloth.โ
Freya realized that her future grandmother-in-law would never truly care about herโit was all just a game of benefits. With that thought, she turned off her phone.
Sure enough, the Sutton familyโs driver arrived promptly. As Freya got into the car, the driver glanced at her through the rearview mirror, his tone impatient. โMs. Dawson, going off to school without informing Mrs. Sutton? Youโve got us running around like headless chickens.โ
Used to the complaints, Freya wasnโt surprised. Working for the Sutton family, these people thought they were above everyone else. Back in the day, Freya was Kieranโs lapdog, always eager to please Kieran, the security, the drivers, and even the servants. So, it wasnโt long before no one took Freya seriously.
Freya replied coldly, โIt seems Iโve troubled you.โ
Oblivious to the edge in Freyaโs voice, the driver continued, โMs. Dawson, all that book learning is fine and dandy, but it wonโt do you any good if you canโt land a good husband. Youโre better off spending your time pleasing Mr. Sutton. Iโm telling you this for your sake. Whatโs the use of all that education if you end up alone?โ
His words were laced with disdain.
