Chapter 278

โ€œMs. Dawson, rest assured. Here at Echo Cityโ€™s Tyler Group, weโ€™ve always been above board with our dealings. Even if thereโ€™s an investigation, I can guarantee it wonโ€™t trace back to you, Ms. Dawson.โ€

While speaking, Preston looked at Freya with a confident smile. โ€œDoing business with me is all about high risk and reward. I donโ€™t take you for the faint-hearted, Ms. Dawson. If you were, you wouldnโ€™t have approached me in the first place.โ€

Freya shifted uncomfortably under Prestonโ€™s gaze. Preston was no saint. His demeanor reeked of that all-too-familiar traderโ€™s greed. Initially, Freya approached Preston to secure her future. Little did she know how difficult he would be to deal with. She couldnโ€™t fathom how someone like Preston would become devoted to Eloise.

โ€œOkay, if this is Mr. Tylerโ€™s goodwill, I accept it. But I want it in writing,โ€ Freya declared.

Preston raised his eyebrow. โ€œSay the word.โ€

โ€œIf anything related to Tyler Group goes south, it has nothing to do with me.โ€

โ€œMs. Dawson, donโ€™t you think thatโ€™s a bit cold?โ€

โ€œI have no emotional ties to you.โ€

โ€œIf you sign, Iโ€™ll accept this share agreement. But if you donโ€™tโ€ฆโ€ Freya trailed off, leaving Preston awaiting her following words. Taking a deep breath, Freya went on, โ€œIf you donโ€™t sign, Iโ€™ll turn myself in. We can both go down if it comes to that.โ€

Prestonโ€™s reaction was to laugh, a rarity for him. Neil was the first to chuckle, saying, โ€œMs. Dawson, you seem unaware. If you turn yourself in, the โ€˜fishโ€™ might not die, but the โ€˜netโ€™ will break.โ€

Freya knew of Prestonโ€™s influence abroad, and he was considered a dark horse in Echo City. But Prestonโ€™s adversary was no ordinary foe. It was Kieran. The saying goes, even a mighty dragon cannot crush a local serpent. If Kieran sought to oppose Preston, the outcome of their conflict was uncertain.

Rather than being implicated later, Freya preferred to clear her name from Prestonโ€™s dealings from the outset.

โ€œFine, Iโ€™ll sign,โ€ Preston conceded.

Neil interrupted, โ€œMs. Dawson, this boils down to trust. You should know Preston seldom operates by the book. Even with his signature, thereโ€™s no guarantee heโ€™ll keep you out of it.โ€

Neilโ€™s solemn advice was met with a cold glance from Preston, silencing him immediately.

Freya retorted, โ€œThatโ€™s overseas. Here is Echo City. A signature here holds legal weight. Mr. Tyler, being new to Echo City, likely doesnโ€™t have the connections I fear.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re right. This time, Iโ€™ll honor my word.โ€ Preston said in an almost patronizing tone and instructed Hans to have their lawyer prepare another contract.

While waiting for the contract, Prestonโ€™s attention finally settled on Freyaโ€™s bandaged arm. Wrapped in gauze, her arm, alongside the bruises on her face, painted a picture of her recent ordeal.

Feeling Prestonโ€™s gaze on her, Freya shivered and asked, โ€œWhat are you staring at?โ€

โ€œTo see Ms. Dawson still standing, despite such harsh treatment, is truly remarkable.โ€

โ€œYou knew?โ€ Realizing Preston was aware of her tribulations fueled Freyaโ€™s indignation. โ€œHad you not meddled with the Harwood family, I wouldnโ€™t be in this mess. Mr. Tyler, next time you plan such actions, could you at least give me a heads-up?โ€
