Chapter 298

When Freyaโ€™s gaze met Prestonโ€™s, she hesitated, her previous determination to leave momentarily faltering.

โ€œWhere are you off to?โ€ Preston asked, his tone indifferent.

โ€œKieranโ€™s looking for me. I have to go home for a bit,โ€ Freya replied.

Hearing that, Preston pressed, โ€œAnd what about your writing? Are you still practicing?โ€

โ€œUmโ€ฆ Yes, butโ€ฆโ€

โ€œPractice isnโ€™t something you do sporadically. If Kieranโ€™s calling you back every day, does that mean youโ€™ll leave every day?โ€

Freya fell silent under Prestonโ€™s reprimand, not daring to speak up.

Preston added coldly, โ€œYouโ€™re free to go, of course. But if you do, donโ€™t bother returning to me for writing lessons.โ€ His tone turned icy, leaving Freya with no doubt about how serious he was. She had produced an essay with her left hand just the night before, and abandoning her progress was not an option.

Overhearing the commotion upstairs, Neil came down to investigate. Seeing both silent, he asked, โ€œWhatโ€™s going on here?โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆ I wanted to head back for a bit, but Mr. Tyler isnโ€™t keen on the idea,โ€ Freya explained, cautiously watching Prestonโ€™s reaction.

Preston remained impassive, which Neil quickly picked up on. โ€œIs it Kieran calling you back?โ€

Freya nodded. โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve called off the engagement. Why bother with Kieran?โ€ As Neil spoke, he gently pushed Freya back onto the couch, continuing, โ€œI get it. Youโ€™re worried Kieran might retaliate against the Dawson family. But look, Prestonโ€™s taken you under his wing as your mentor. Heโ€™ll look out for you.โ€

Freya found herself reassured by Neilโ€™s words and sat back down.

โ€œIf Kieran becomes a nuisance, Iโ€™ll take you back tonight, claiming itโ€™s for a physical therapy session. With the engagement off, he has no say over who youโ€™re friends with. It makes sense, right?โ€

โ€œRight. That makes sense.โ€

Comforted by Neilโ€™s logic, Freya no longer felt inclined to put up with Kieran. She would have cut ties with him long ago had she not felt outmatched.

โ€œThen stay here and relax. Iโ€™ll ensure you get back safely once itโ€™s dark,โ€ Neil promised, trying to put Freya at ease.

Observing Prestonโ€™s silent agreement, Freya nodded. โ€œOkay, thanks, Dr. Anderson.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t mention it! Youโ€™re Prestonโ€™s student, which makes you mine, too. Preston and I have always had each otherโ€™s backs.โ€

Noticing Prestonโ€™s gaze, Neil quickly excused himself. โ€œUh, Iโ€™ve got things to attend to. Iโ€™ll be back tonight.โ€

With that, Neil left, and so did Hans, leaving Freyaโ€™s room in silence.

Turning to Preston, Freya ventured, โ€œSoโ€ฆ should I go and practice writing in the study?โ€

โ€œSuit yourself,โ€ Preston replied without a glance, leaving.

Thanks to Neilโ€™s intervention, Freya felt justified in staying in the Tyler Mansion, unlike the previous night when Preston had kept a close eye on her.
