Chapter 312
The landlady eyed the crisp twenty-dollar bill in her hand and finally relented. โFine, she can stay for the night. But she must be gone by tomorrow. This place isnโt for just any Tom, Dick, or Harry. I wonโt have her bringing bad luck to my doorstep!โ
The neighbors whispered and pointed at Freya, thinking she was no saintly debutante. Freya couldnโt help but find the whole situation somewhat amusing. Even the upscale apartment Kieran had found for her didnโt impress her much, let alone this run-down neighborhood.
Pulling out her phone, Freya dialed 911. The keypad was clear for everyone to hear.
The landlady was furious to see Freya calling the police. โOh, so you call the cops? I havenโt reported you for solicitation yet! Everyone, come and have a look. Isnโt this woman outrageous?โ
โFreya, Freya!โ Kara rushed to Freyaโs side, pleading, โLetโs not make a big deal out of this. For my sake, please? Calling the police could make things worse for youโฆโ
Karaโs vague insinuations convinced the onlookers that Freya was up to no good.
When Kara reached out to touch her, Freya smoothly withdrew her hand, stating, โI donโt recall having a cousin like you. Ms. Orson, arenโt you too eager to paint yourself in gold?โ
Freyaโs unapologetic tone drew sympathy for Kara from the crowd.
โWhatโs wrong with you? Sheโs trying to help you out of kindness and even spending her money to smooth things over here! How could you be so harsh?โ
โExactly, itโs not like youโre some princess. Youโd think you were born into wealth the way you act like sheโs dying to be related to you!โ โAppreciate it when people are trying to help. You should get thrown out, left to fend for yourself with nowhere to stay!โ
The neighborsโ clamoring voices seemed to drown Freya out.
As the 911 call went through, the operator quickly answered. โ911, whatโs your emergency?โ
Freya replied urgently, โA woman has broken into my home, gone through my stuff, and is spreading lies about me. I need police sent here right away. Also, can I speak to your chief?โ
Freyaโs request to speak directly to the chief caught the officer off guard. It was the first time they had encountered someone demanding to talk to the chief upon calling. Could this personโs identity be of significant importance?
The neighbors exchanged glances, wondering what Freya was up to.
The officer replied, โSorry, our chief is busy and not in the office, but weโll dispatch officers to your location. If you wish to speak to our chief directly, try calling his office.โ
Freya was not satisfied with this response. โFine, then Iโll contact your chief myself,โ she said, providing her address before hanging up.
โAll this fuss for the chief over such a trivial matter? As if youโre some VIP!โ
โShe will do anything for attention!โ
โI donโt believe you can get through to the chief. With all the chief has to manage, do you think the chief would bother with a common citizen?โ
The skepticism continued.
The landlady scoffed, โIf she could contact the chief, Iโll eat my hat! Does she think sheโs someone, huh? If she were, why would she come to a place like this? Does she think weโre fools?โ
