Chapter 62

The following morning, word had spread that the Sutton family would hold a press clarification meeting. Audrey slammed the newspaper on the table inside the Sutton Mansion, standing up in anger. โ€œThis is madness!โ€

โ€œMrs. Sutton,โ€ the familyโ€™s aide picked up the newspaper, her face changing as she read about todayโ€™s press meeting to clarify the relationship between Kieran and Freya. โ€œHow could such a big decision be made without consulting me?โ€ Audrey demanded coldly. โ€œWhat on earth happened? Jarrett, explain yourself!โ€

Summoned to Audreyโ€™s presence, Janett stammered, โ€œMrs. Suttonโ€ฆ last night, during Ms. Harwoodโ€™s birthday bashโ€ฆ a joke was made at Ms. Dawsonโ€™s expense, and Ms. Dawson proposed calling off her engagement. Mr. Suttonโ€ฆ agreed?โ€

โ€œEloise again?โ€ Audrey, who already disliked Eloise, grew even angrier upon hearing Eloise had caused Kieran and Freyaโ€™s breakup. โ€œWell, isnโ€™t she relentless? Take me to the venue! I want to see who dares to hold this press meeting without my approval!โ€

Jarrett hesitated. โ€œMadam, the press meeting has startedโ€ฆโ€

โ€œInsolence!โ€ Audrey exclaimed. โ€œTo think my grandson would forsake such a wonderful girl as Freya for that siren!โ€

Determined, Audrey declared, โ€œIf you donโ€™t drive, Iโ€™ll go myself!โ€

Seeing Audreyโ€™s determination, Jarrett finally gave in. โ€œPlease, Mrs. Sutton, try to stay calm. Iโ€™ll take you there right away.โ€

With that, Jarrett hurried off to the Sutton familyโ€™s garage.

Meanwhile, at the press meeting venue, Kieran checked his watch, noting it was almost ten oโ€™clock, and the reporters had all arrived. He wondered, โ€œWhy hasnโ€™t Jarrett shown up yet?โ€

โ€œKieran, are you sure about this? Calling off your engagement with Ms. Dawson?โ€ Eloise asked, her voice tinged with anxiety. โ€œAudrey adores Ms. Dawsonโ€ฆ she might not agree.โ€

Kieran responded coldly, โ€œIt was Freyaโ€™s decision. Grandma wonโ€™t object. You didnโ€™t need to come today. Iโ€™ll have Jarrett take you home later.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t. This all started because of me. I never imagined that Ms. Dawson would break off the engagement over me. Itโ€™s all my fault,โ€ Eloise said, her face filled with guilt.

โ€œItโ€™s not about you. Itโ€™s Freyaโ€™s pride,โ€ Kieran retorted. Heโ€™d made it clear to Freya that while he could offer her the title of Mrs. Sutton, he couldnโ€™t give her his affections. Freya wanted too much, both his hand and his heart, but the world doesnโ€™t work that way.

Sensing Kieranโ€™s disdain for Freya, Eloise tentatively asked, โ€œKieran, do you thinkโ€ฆ Ms. Dawson and Mr. Beckettโ€ฆโ€

โ€œRonan was playing around. Do you think he fell for Freya?โ€ Kieran scoffed. โ€œIf it werenโ€™t for Freyaโ€™s previous attentiveness to me, Ronan wouldnโ€™t have noticed her. He just wanted to spite me, and I wonโ€™t let him succeed.โ€

โ€œBut I think Ms. Dawson likes Mr. Beckett,โ€ Eloise ventured.

โ€œJust a womanโ€™s tactic,โ€ Kieran dismissed. โ€œSheโ€™s only with Ronan to make me regret it. Such petty tricks are beneath me.โ€

โ€œMs. Dawson, your waiting room is this way.โ€ A staff memberโ€™s voice outside caught Kieranโ€™s attention.

In a sleek black dress that hugged her curves, her hair styled in soft waves cascading down her back, Freya looked stunning with just a touch of makeup. The staff member couldnโ€™t help but give Freya a second look as Freya said, โ€œNo need. Letโ€™s start as soon as possible.โ€
