Chapter 62
The following morning, word had spread that the Sutton family would hold a press clarification meeting. Audrey slammed the newspaper on the table inside the Sutton Mansion, standing up in anger. โThis is madness!โ
โMrs. Sutton,โ the familyโs aide picked up the newspaper, her face changing as she read about todayโs press meeting to clarify the relationship between Kieran and Freya. โHow could such a big decision be made without consulting me?โ Audrey demanded coldly. โWhat on earth happened? Jarrett, explain yourself!โ
Summoned to Audreyโs presence, Janett stammered, โMrs. Suttonโฆ last night, during Ms. Harwoodโs birthday bashโฆ a joke was made at Ms. Dawsonโs expense, and Ms. Dawson proposed calling off her engagement. Mr. Suttonโฆ agreed?โ
โEloise again?โ Audrey, who already disliked Eloise, grew even angrier upon hearing Eloise had caused Kieran and Freyaโs breakup. โWell, isnโt she relentless? Take me to the venue! I want to see who dares to hold this press meeting without my approval!โ
Jarrett hesitated. โMadam, the press meeting has startedโฆโ
โInsolence!โ Audrey exclaimed. โTo think my grandson would forsake such a wonderful girl as Freya for that siren!โ
Determined, Audrey declared, โIf you donโt drive, Iโll go myself!โ
Seeing Audreyโs determination, Jarrett finally gave in. โPlease, Mrs. Sutton, try to stay calm. Iโll take you there right away.โ
With that, Jarrett hurried off to the Sutton familyโs garage.
Meanwhile, at the press meeting venue, Kieran checked his watch, noting it was almost ten oโclock, and the reporters had all arrived. He wondered, โWhy hasnโt Jarrett shown up yet?โ
โKieran, are you sure about this? Calling off your engagement with Ms. Dawson?โ Eloise asked, her voice tinged with anxiety. โAudrey adores Ms. Dawsonโฆ she might not agree.โ
Kieran responded coldly, โIt was Freyaโs decision. Grandma wonโt object. You didnโt need to come today. Iโll have Jarrett take you home later.โ
โI canโt. This all started because of me. I never imagined that Ms. Dawson would break off the engagement over me. Itโs all my fault,โ Eloise said, her face filled with guilt.
โItโs not about you. Itโs Freyaโs pride,โ Kieran retorted. Heโd made it clear to Freya that while he could offer her the title of Mrs. Sutton, he couldnโt give her his affections. Freya wanted too much, both his hand and his heart, but the world doesnโt work that way.
Sensing Kieranโs disdain for Freya, Eloise tentatively asked, โKieran, do you thinkโฆ Ms. Dawson and Mr. Beckettโฆโ
โRonan was playing around. Do you think he fell for Freya?โ Kieran scoffed. โIf it werenโt for Freyaโs previous attentiveness to me, Ronan wouldnโt have noticed her. He just wanted to spite me, and I wonโt let him succeed.โ
โBut I think Ms. Dawson likes Mr. Beckett,โ Eloise ventured.
โJust a womanโs tactic,โ Kieran dismissed. โSheโs only with Ronan to make me regret it. Such petty tricks are beneath me.โ
โMs. Dawson, your waiting room is this way.โ A staff memberโs voice outside caught Kieranโs attention.
In a sleek black dress that hugged her curves, her hair styled in soft waves cascading down her back, Freya looked stunning with just a touch of makeup. The staff member couldnโt help but give Freya a second look as Freya said, โNo need. Letโs start as soon as possible.โ
