Chapter 20

"Others considered various options, sifting through thousands, but ended up with nothing worthwhile," someone said.

"Instead, the old man arranged for Claire Wilson to marry someone undesirable," the speaker continued. "Who knew that situation could improve so drastically?"

Wendy nodded seriously. "If possible, I must get closer to Charlie Wade. Even if he disregards me, it'll benefit our family. In these times, we can't rely on anyone but him."

Hannah sighed. "Suit yourself, Mom. I'm exhausted. Let's go home and rest until Grandmother finishes her shift and we can eat."

Lady Wilson had spent the day bagging groceries at the supermarket. The plastic bags created static electricity with each pull. Despite this, she was content. She'd had a free lunch in the employee cafeteria—the best meal of her life. The food wasn't exceptional; it was simple and not greasy, but Lady Wilson had been hungry for so long. A bowl of rice felt like a heavenly treat, and the added meat and vegetables were incredibly satisfying. She even found herself amused by the situation.

Around 5:00 p.m., the foreman approached her. "You've done a great job," he said, handing her a hundred dollars. "Will you return tomorrow? New Year's Eve is our busiest time. I'll pay you two hundred if you come."

"Really?" Lady Wilson, overjoyed, carefully pocketed the money. "Yes, I'll be here!"

The foreman nodded. "Fine. Be here at nine tomorrow morning."

Lady Wilson agreed, then remembered something. "Foreman, what time does the cafeteria open in the afternoon?"

"Dinner is at 6:00 p.m.," he replied.

"Can I eat there then?" she asked.

The foreman hesitated. "Employees get one meal coupon per day, and you already used yours at noon."

Lady Wilson nodded, dejected. "Alright, I'll see you tomorrow."

Seeing her disappointment, the foreman relented. "Work until 7:00 p.m., and I'll get you another meal coupon. You can eat before you go home."

Lady Wilson's face lit up. "Two more hours for another meal? Of course! Thank you, Foreman!"
