Chapter 28

Phoebe looked at Jamarโ€™s face and couldnโ€™t help but laugh. She remembered how heโ€™d pull the same stunt whenever he annoyed her, and she chose to ignore him. Back then, Phoebe figured thatโ€™s what close siblings did, so she just put up with it.

Now, Phoebe scoffed, โ€œJamar, have you lost your brain!โ€

Jamar looked at her in disbelief. โ€œWhat did you say?โ€

Jamar thought this would be the perfect excuse to make up with Phoebe, yet here she was, not buying his act even after heโ€™d lowered himself this much.

โ€œI said youโ€™re brain-dead,โ€ Phoebe replied.

Jamar raised his voice, sounding hurt. โ€œMy hands and feet hurt, Phoebe. Are you seriously not going to care!โ€

Phoebe rolled her eyes at him. โ€œLike I care.โ€ With that, she called for Lexie, picked up the basin, and walked on.

Jamar stood there, looking frustrated and angry. โ€œPhoebe, youโ€™re just great. I can see right through you now.โ€

She doesnโ€™t care about me at all, Jamar thought. Sheโ€™s just getting colder and colder. His words sounded rough, but deep down, he felt miserable.

Phoebe didnโ€™t look back or pause, replying, โ€œGood. Now go wash your brain out.โ€

When they came back after washing up, Lexie noticed Reece standing right where Jamar had been. She turned to Phoebe and said, โ€œIs he here to see you too?โ€

Lexie was genuinely confused. Whether it was Jamar, the pop star, or Reece, the movie star, they both openly took Siennaโ€™s side, going against Phoebe. Yet, here they were, coming to make up with Phoebe behind her back. Honestly, Phoebeโ€™s words fit perfectly; both of them really seemed brain-dead.

Phoebe was equally speechless. The two of them took turns showing up; it was like they had issues or something.

So before Reece could speak, Phoebe looked straight at him and said, โ€œYou go wash your brain out too.โ€

Reeceโ€™s face fell, and he grumbled, โ€œI havenโ€™t lost my brain.โ€

Phoebe smirked. โ€œThen youโ€™re still brain-dead.โ€

Reece laughed unexpectedly. โ€œFeel better now that youโ€™ve gotten that out? If youโ€™re done, can we talk?โ€

Phoebe shook her head. โ€œWeโ€™re done. Nothing left to say.โ€

Reece frowned. โ€œI donโ€™t want to hear that again.โ€ He glanced at Lexie, then back at Phoebe, lowering his voice. โ€œIf you keep this up, I wonโ€™t mind going public with our relationship.โ€

Phoebe raised an eyebrow and said, โ€œItโ€™s just an ex-boyfriend. If you want to go public, go for it.โ€

Reece was about to lose it. โ€œI told you, I donโ€™t agree with breaking up.โ€ Heโ€™d never once considered breaking up with her, much less agreed to it. Phoebe rolled her eyes. โ€œLike I care whether you agree or not, I dumped you, case closed.โ€

Then Phoebe continued, her tone growing impatient, โ€œYou and Jamar are so annoying. Canโ€™t you just give me some peace!โ€

Reece, however, remained persistent. โ€œIf you talk to me alone, Iโ€™ll give you all the peace you want.โ€

Reece felt like if they didnโ€™t clear things up, Phoebe would only drift further away. Especially with Maddox getting closer to her, his sense of urgency grew.

Phoebe shook her head. โ€œIf youโ€™re here to make me delete that recording, then save your breath.โ€

At those words, Reeceโ€™s expression changed slightly. He hadnโ€™t expected her to know that Sienna had asked him to get her to delete the recording. Phoebe had been watching him the entire time, noticing the fleeting change on his face, which only made her feel more amused. In the past, sheโ€™d probably feel devastated by this. Luckily, now, she neither loved nor hated him.

โ€œReece, Iโ€™m starting to agree more with something Maddox said earlier today,โ€ Phoebe remarked.

Reece took a deep breath and said softly, โ€œWhat, you think Iโ€™m your enemy now! I donโ€™t just come to you for this.โ€

Reece wanted to clear up the misunderstanding and make amends with her. Of course, he also really wanted her to delete the recording, or at least not make it public.

Phoebeโ€™s stare was icy. โ€œYou actually disgust me right now.โ€

Reeceโ€™s face fell again. He coaxed, โ€œPhoebe, can you stop acting like this, please!โ€

Why couldnโ€™t she just sit down and talk! Does she really need to make things so awkward and say such hurtful things? Reece thought.

The phrase โ€œstop acting like thisโ€ was the last thing Phoebe wanted to hear.

โ€œYouโ€™re more and more like the Jenkins family. If youโ€™ve got issues, go fix them instead of trying to feel important in my life,โ€ Phoebe said, grabbing Lexie and heading off.

Reece wanted to stop her; he was determined to get through to her today.

Just then, Maddox appeared from the side, striding over casually, as if Reece wasnโ€™t even there.

With a grin, Maddox looked at Phoebe and asked, โ€œPheebs, are we making breakfast ourselves tomorrow, or should we grab some at one of the villagersโ€™ houses?โ€

Phoebe smiled back. โ€œAnything in particular you want to eat?โ€

Maddoxโ€™s eyes lit up. โ€œYou mean I get to pick!โ€

โ€œYep, as long as I know how to make it,โ€ Phoebe replied.

Maddox didnโ€™t hesitate. โ€œIโ€™d love a sandwich.โ€

Phoebe nodded. โ€œSure, Iโ€™ll get up early and make sandwiches for everyone.โ€

Maddox nudged Reece aside subtly. โ€œAwesome. Make sure to wake me up, and Iโ€™ll get up early to help.โ€

Phoebe nodded. โ€œDeal!โ€ Then she waved a hand and said, โ€œAlright, weโ€™re heading back. You shouldโ€ฆโ€

Maddox waved back at them. โ€œGoodnight.โ€

Standing in Maddoxโ€™s way, Reece could only watch as Phoebe walked off.

Chapter 29

Once sheโ€™d gone back to her room, Reece shot Maddox a cold look. โ€œMaddox, sticking your nose where it doesnโ€™t belong isnโ€™t exactly a good habit.โ€

Maddox arched a brow, saying, โ€œAnd clinging like this isnโ€™t either. Sheโ€™s already told you sheโ€™s disgusted, why keep trying? Youโ€™re just pathetic.โ€

Maddox hadnโ€™t intended to overhear them. Heโ€™d just been leaving the bathroom, and there they were. He hadnโ€™t expected that Reece and Phoebe had actually dated.

Sizing Reece up, Maddox thought the guy just had a trashy vibe. It was a good thing Phoebe had broken up with him.

But Maddox couldnโ€™t understand why Reece was still clinging to her, especially when Phoebeโ€™s dislike of Sienna was so obvious.

Phoebe didnโ€™t like Sienna. But Reece chose another woman over his girlfriend and then had the nerve to come crawling back. What a joke!

Reeceโ€™s gaze turned even colder, and he said coldly, โ€œWhat happens between Phoebe and me is none of your business.โ€

Maddox scoffed. โ€œAnd you think youโ€™re someone special, huh?โ€ He folded his arms, adding tauntingly, โ€œIโ€™m making it my business. What are you gonna do about it!โ€

Phoebeโ€™s my lifesaver. No way am I gonna watch her walk into a mess like this, Maddox thought.

โ€œYourโ€ฆโ€ Reece shouted. He had never dealt with someone this unreasonable and brazen before. He looked at Maddox, a frown deepening on his face. โ€œWhatโ€™s your angle with Phoebe?โ€

Maddox didnโ€™t seem like the type to always stick his neck out for women.

Maddox rubbed his chin, giving it a thought, and replied, โ€œShe saved me, so I return the favor?โ€

โ€œCome to think of it, not a bad idea,โ€ Maddox thought.

Reeceโ€™s glare grew colder. โ€œPhoebeโ€™s not someone you can just mess around with. Get that thought out of your head.โ€

Ever since the show started, Maddox had backed up Phoebe, calling out Jamar and Sienna along with Reece. Now it was obvious why; it was infuriating.

Maddox gave a mocking laugh, then, with a smirk, patted Reeceโ€™s shoulder in a deliberately taunting way. โ€œNo need to worry, ex-boyfriend.โ€

With that, Maddox walked off, not in the mood to keep talking to someone with water in their head.

Chapter 29

Phoebe got back to the room; she noticed Lexie staring at her. Smiling, she asked, โ€œWhy are you looking at me like that?โ€

Lexie didnโ€™t hold back. โ€œI never thought Iโ€™d be getting the scoop about you and Reece.โ€ Sheโ€™d had her suspicions about Reece, and it turned out heโ€™d dated Phoebe before.

Phoebe shrugged. โ€œJust a mistake I made when I was young.โ€

Lexie laughed, amused by her calm attitude. Who hasnโ€™t had a crush on a jerk when they were young? The important part is you got out early.

Lexie had been betrayed by a boyfriend before, so she understood. And she had no patience for someone like Reece, who could have a girlfriend but still be tangled up with another woman.

The recording Phoebe had was bound to affect Sienna. Reece, meanwhile, didnโ€™t want to break up but still wanted to help Sienna, insisting that Phoebe delete the recording.

โ€˜Being that obviously toxic only makes him worse,โ€™ Lexie thought.

Phoebe nodded in agreement. โ€œExactly. Better to cut your losses while you can.โ€

Lexie thought for a moment and then asked, curious, โ€œSo, you and Jamar, you two didnโ€™t have anything going on, did you?โ€

Jamarโ€™s playful charming manner didnโ€™t exactly look like he was just a friend.

Phoebe chuckled. โ€œNot a chance. Heโ€™s my brother, after all.โ€

That secret was bound to come out sooner or later, so telling Lexie didnโ€™t bother her. From what she could tell, Lexie wasnโ€™t the type to betray her.

Lexieโ€™s eyes widened. โ€œWait, Jamar is related to you? You two are siblings?โ€

Phoebe nodded. โ€œWe used to be, anyway.โ€

Lexie frowned, confused. โ€œUsed to be?โ€

Phoebe replied, โ€œRight before this show, I officially cut ties with him and my family.โ€

Lexie looked shocked. โ€œWhy? Is it because of Sienna?โ€

Phoebe sighed. โ€œSheโ€™s definitely a big part of it.โ€

โ€œSo you and Sienna, youโ€™re sisters too?โ€ Lexie asked.

Phoebe shook her head and explained, โ€œNo, my parents adopted her, but Iโ€™m their biological daughter. I actually got separated from my family as a kid; Jamar lost me. They found me about a year ago.โ€

โ€œAnd since then, theyโ€™ve acted like Iโ€™m intruding on Siennaโ€™s space. They expect me to give up everything for her, so I had enough and cut ties withโ€ฆโ€

Lexie didnโ€™t expect the truth to be like this. She looked outraged and said gently, โ€œYour family is unbelievable. Thatโ€™s just messed up.โ€

โ€˜Sienna has taken over Phoebeโ€™s identity, and yet they want Phoebe to make sacrifices? And Jamar, her brother, treats her like sheโ€™s the intruder after being the one whoโ€™s lost her?โ€™ Lexie muttered.

It was clear Phoebe had been through a lot before she decided to walk away, and it was far more than a few words could explain.

Phoebe brushed it off with a light smile. โ€œIโ€™d rather just think of myself as not having any family.โ€

Lexie admired Phoebeโ€™s clarity and resilience. Then she comforted Phoebe. โ€œGood for you for seeing it that way.โ€

Not wanting to push her to relive painful memories, Lexie changed the topic. โ€œPheebs, you said you could do a reading for me, would you mind?โ€

Phoebe nodded. โ€œSure.โ€ Soon, she took a moment, studying Lexieโ€™s face, then lifted her right hand gently, focusing as if reading between the lines. After a while, Phoebe said, โ€œYour love life aside, everything else seems pretty smooth.โ€

Lexie was taken aback and asked, โ€œYou can tell my love lifeโ€™s been rough?โ€
