Chapter 51

Brian walked into the company and immediately spotted a familiar figure ahead. He paused, realizing it was his wife. “Hasn’t she said she was working overtime on set with the star! Why is she back at the office at this hour?” he wondered. Just as he was about to call out to her, he suddenly recalled what Phoebe had said, so he held back.

Brian slowly followed behind, watching as she entered the elevator. He approached it, waiting for it to stop on the fifth floor. After a moment, Brian pressed the button to go to the fifth floor too. That was where his office was located. Is she coming to find me? But that doesn’t make sense, he wondered. Brian had been the one picking up the kids lately, and she was well aware of it.

With doubts swirling in his mind, Brian exited on the fifth floor and went to his office, only to find no one there. He wandered around the floor for a while, and after about ten minutes, he reached the door of the newly promoted director’s office. The light was on, and voices drifted out.

Brian tiptoed closer. The door wasn’t completely shut, leaving a gap that allowed him to hear the conversation inside. “You’re really not doing well today,” a female voice sounded. “That’s it?”

Hearing his wife’s voice made Brian’s face turn gloomy. He fought the impulse to kick the door down and instead took out his phone to record the audio, continuing to listen. Then a male voice, belonging to the new director, spoke. “It’s hard to perform in the office. Let’s change locations later, and I’ll show you what I can do. Besides, I’m much better than Brian, right?”

“Of course, you’re definitely better than him. Damn it! When can I finally divorce him?” she lamented. “Looking at that old face every day makes me sick to my stomach.”

“And his son? He constantly begs me to take him to the amusement park. It drives me crazy,” she added.

The male voice reassured her. “Baby, just hang in there. You’ve managed for two years already, it’s not going to hurt to last a little longer.”

“But my patience is really running thin,” she said.

“Once you get those documents from him, it’ll be time to pull out,” the director said. “We could even pay someone to create a scene, catch them in the act. He’s the one who cheated. He’s in the wrong.”

“Not only will you have a reason to divorce him, but you’ll also have the chance to claim most of his assets,” he added, “Brian has been a director for so many years, and you mentioned he occasionally takes private jobs. He must have a decent fortune.”

“If it weren’t for helping you, who would care about his little fortune?” she said. “But he’s wasted two years of my youth. He owes me for that.”

She switched tactics. “Haven’t I helped you by causing him to make two major mistakes that got him demoted? Now that you’re the new director, why do you still need his documents?”

“This isn’t easy to get. I’ve tried several times to get the password for his laptop, but he hasn’t told me.”

The male voice replied, “You don’t understand. He’s been running the company for years, and the information he has is crucial. There are many resources in there that could determine whether I can advance further.”

“So, baby, when you can divorce him depends on how fast you can get those documents.”

She said, “What if I do it like last time and put sleeping pills in his drink? Then I could sneak his laptop out while you guys unlock it, copy the data, and put it back?”

The male voice considered. “That’s also a plan. After a few days, you’ll have a candlelit dinner with him, pour him some drinks, and slip him a sleeping pill in his water.”

“This way, he’ll sleep longer and won’t suspect anything, thinking he just got drunk.”

The woman responded. “Alright, it’s settled then.”

The man continued. “Once the plan is executed, I’ll have Ollie help you debut and make you famous.”

She asked, “You’re sure about this? Does Ollie know about this?”

He said. “Of course! Otherwise, how could I manage to take down Brian so smoothly? Both Ollie and I want to clean the house from the previous president’s regime. And Ollie hasn’t been at the company long, yet Brian’s already offended him.”

“If he doesn’t leave, who will? Brian has always been stable, having run the company for years. Unless he makes a mistake, Ollie won’t easily change the director. That’s why he needs to make a mistake.”

“Once we get those documents from him, Ollie can kick him and his team out,” he added.

The woman said, “I see. Two years ago, you told me to cozy up to him, to his son, and his mother, making him marry me. Ollie knows about that?”

The man confirmed. “Yes, Ollie had people investigate. Brian cares deeply about his mother and son’s opinions, which is why I had you approach him from that angle to win him over.”

The woman commented. “You two really have patience.”

The man proudly said, “Of course! We’re big players in this. Let’s go. We need to change locations.”

“Alright, I’m curious to see how impressive you are today,” she said.

At this point, Brian’s face darkened with rage. He didn’t kick the door down; instead, he took a deep breath, saved the recording, and quietly walked away. Rushing in now would only lead to a fight and tip them off.

Brian didn’t leave the company. Instead, he returned to his office. He turned on his laptop without the lights and began copying all useful data from it. As he copied files, his face was filled with anger and despair.

He never imagined his second wife had been deliberately placed by the new director right by his side. His wife had tragically passed away a few years ago, leaving behind a son. He hadn’t intended to remarry.

Two years ago, this woman was assigned to be his assistant. She was young and beautiful and showered him with kindness and attention. Most importantly, she got along well with his mother and son, often taking his son out to play.

She claimed she loved him so much that she extended that love to his family. Slowly, Brian was charmed by her, and with his mother and son also fond of her, they decided to be together. After dating for a while, they got married.

However, Brian missed a crucial meeting once because he overslept, and he also lost the best opportunity for PR regarding a top celebrity in the company. Consequently, he was demoted from his director position.

He had been puzzled about how he could overslee. Logically, it didn’t make sense. He had never made such a rookie mistake before. Little did he know that this woman was behind his oversleeping.

The shocking part was that both Leon and Ollie knew about it and had colluded with the new director to get Brian kicked out. This woman had been throwing frequent tantrums lately, creating a chaotic atmosphere at home. Brian felt completely battered by her behavior. It turned out she wanted a divorce.

What was even more outrageous was that the two of them were plotting to make Brian the guilty party in the divorce and to claim most of his assets. At that moment, Brian felt not only heartbroken but also filled with anger and resentment at being manipulated.

Suddenly, he remembered something Phoebe had said earlier in the day. “If it were me, I’d make them pay.” At the time, Brian had been confused about why she would say that. Now he understood perfectly, and he felt deeply involved in the situation.

He couldn’t tolerate being set up like this. He wanted them to pay the price. At the same time, he was astonished by Phoebe’s skills. Has she already calculated all of this? he wondered.

Once the data on the laptop was copied, Brian deleted everything and set it so that it couldn’t be recovered. No one would ever get their hands on it again. After sitting for a while, he finally got up, left the office, and headed back to his car.
