Chapter 181: No Mercy

Yunice continued, โ€œElsie didnโ€™t even have a scratch on her. She cried and said she was scaredโ€”asked if that heavy thing was going to kill her. And you comforted her, told her, โ€˜Donโ€™t be scared, itโ€™s okay, it wasnโ€™t going to hit you; see? It hit Yunice.โ€™ You sounded so relieved when you said itโ€”so calm. But you never once looked back at me. Elsie was already fifteen, and I was just sixteen, but you never comforted me. That day, while you held her and wiped her tears, you told me to clean the blood off my hand so I could drive you both to the hospital. Did you beg for me then, like youโ€™re begging now? Did you get down on your knees and plead with the doctors to treat the kid with a fractured hand? Did you tell them if it wasnโ€™t treated right, itโ€™d heal wrong, leave scars, ruin her gripโ€”destroy her dream of becoming a lead surgeon?โ€

Paul looked at Yunice, slightly stunned, as if heโ€™d never heard any of this before. If it was true, then Lily really had gone too far.

Owen stayed half-crouched on the floor, not saying a word; Lily sat in silence, tears running down her face.

Time ticked by. Finally, like he couldnโ€™t take it anymore, Owen suddenly snappedโ€”he threw the disinfectant tray from his hands and shouted, his voice shaking with emotion, โ€œHow much longer are you going to keep dragging up the past!โ€

Tears streamed down Owenโ€™s face as he broke down, yelling, โ€œCanโ€™t you see weโ€™ve been trying to make it up to you? Sure, you were wrongedโ€”but havenโ€™t we done everything we could to fix it?โ€

He grabbed Yunice and shoved her forward, pointing straight at Lily. โ€œLook at Mom. Look at her! Sheโ€™s begging you for mercyโ€”canโ€™t you see sheโ€™s bleeding, crying too? You think youโ€™re the only one whoโ€™s been wronged? You think what sheโ€™s been through isnโ€™t just as bad?โ€

Yunice said flatly, โ€œI never asked for your compensation. Iโ€™ve tried again and again to cut myself out of your lives, but youโ€™re the ones who keep dragging me back. Elsie lost her finger because she had bad intentions. She brought it on herself. That whole thing had nothing to do with me. Whether she can get treatment or notโ€”thatโ€™s not my problem.โ€

Owen gritted his teeth. โ€œYouโ€™re really not going to give an inch?โ€

Yunice answered, โ€œThatโ€™s right.โ€

The air grew heavy again; only the sound of grinding teeth broke the silence. This feelingโ€”Yunice knew it too well. It usually meant one thing: when they felt they couldnโ€™t take it anymore, theyโ€™d turn to violence.

โ€œI had no idea the hospital refused to admit her,โ€ Yunice said quickly, just before they made a move.

Seeing her back down, Owen thought his threats had worked. His expression eased a little.

But then Yunice continued, โ€œBut Iโ€™m guessing Wyatt saw the marks on my neckโ€”thatโ€™s probably why he told the hospital not to take Elsie in.โ€

About how much Wyatt cared about her. None of them believed Wyatt would go that far for her.

Owen said, โ€œI might not know Wyatt, but I sure know you. You donโ€™t understand people; youโ€™ve got no real talentโ€”yeah, youโ€™re pretty, but Silverburghโ€™s full of beautiful women. What could Wyatt possibly see in you? All that kindness he showed you? He was putting on a show for us, and we all knew it. Do you think we donโ€™t get it? Why lie to us?โ€

Honestly, it wasnโ€™t surprising Owen didnโ€™t believe her. Even Yunice didnโ€™t know why Wyatt had gone so far to protect herโ€”but he had. Heโ€™d treated her better than her own blood, who never stopped preaching about family.

Yunice glanced at Paul, surprised he hadnโ€™t chimed in. Isnโ€™t he always the one shouting the loudest?

But Paul just sat there, quiet, eyes focused like he was lost in thought. Yunice noticed how odd he was acting, but now wasnโ€™t the time to ask.

She checked the time, then said, โ€œHereโ€™s a word of advice, youโ€™d better send me back before Wyatt finds out. Otherwise, Elsieโ€™s the one whoโ€™s really going to suffer.โ€

โ€œStop waving Wyattโ€™s name around like itโ€™s a badge of honor. You thinkโ€”โ€ Owen had just raised his voice when Lily suddenly threw her arms around his leg and shook her head.

Owen frowned. โ€œMom, you donโ€™t believe her too, do you? What could Wyatt possibly like about her? Sheโ€™s just riding his coattails; now that sheโ€™s climbed the ladder, she thinks she can act all high and mightyโ€”like weโ€™re supposed to bow to her or somethingโ€ฆโ€

He shot Yunice a defiant look. โ€œThereโ€™s no way sheโ€™s really that tough. You donโ€™t know pain until the knifeโ€™s in your own hand. If she lost a finger like Elsie did, then sheโ€™d understand what Elsieโ€™s going through!โ€

Yunice snapped her head toward Owen, voice cold as ice. โ€œYou want to break my finger?โ€

Owen had only meant to scare her. He knew Yunice feared pain; just mentioning it would make her cave and agree to get Elsie the treatment she needed.

โ€œYunny, donโ€™t push Owen,โ€ Lily pleaded. โ€œHe doesnโ€™t want to hurt youโ€”but we really canโ€™t delay Elsieโ€™s treatment any longer. Owen knows youโ€™re jealous of her; youโ€™ve always wanted to ruin her. But hurting yourself just to get back at her? Itโ€™s not worth itโ€ฆ Yunny, please. Let it go.โ€
