Chapter 414 The Needle in the Shadows

Neither Paul nor Yunice responded to Owenโ€™s weak, delusional pleas.

Paul hadnโ€™t known where Elsie was.

And Yunice? She found it almost pitiful how Owen still clung to the hope that Elsie would save him.

Even nowโ€ฆ he still believed sheโ€™d come.

Without a word, Yunice subtly nudged the antigen kit under Owenโ€™s bed with her foot.

Then she straightened and said to Paul, โ€œIf youโ€™ve got something to say, letโ€™s talk outside.โ€

As they turned to leave, Owen struggled. โ€œPaulโ€“donโ€™t go! I still have things to ask-!โ€

But his body had just endured surgery, and his limbs were restrained to prevent exactly this kind of movement. He couldnโ€™t even sit up.

Outside the room, in a blind spot from the cameras, Paul finally spoke.

โ€œIโ€™m not here for Elsie,โ€ he said. โ€œI came to find you.โ€

Yunice narrowed her eyes, her guard up.

Paul gave her a look. โ€œDo you really think Iโ€™d risk coming all the way into a sealed-off infection zoneโ€“for what, a casual visit?โ€

Her contempt radiated through the clear visor. Her silence told him exactly what she thought.

Paul stepped closer. โ€œBelieve it or not, when I called off our engagement, I was just mad. I didnโ€™t think youโ€™d actually marry Wyatt. But I never let go. I still want you. Iโ€™m not giving up.โ€

Yuniceโ€™s expression tightened. If not for the hazmat suit between them, she wouldโ€™ve slapped him across the face.

Instead, she sneered, โ€œYouโ€™re like a toad squatting at someoneโ€™s feet. Disgusting, not dangerousโ€“but enough to make someone sick.โ€

Paulโ€™s eyes narrowed. โ€œYou think Iโ€™m weak? That Wyattโ€™s better than me? Youโ€™re wrong.โ€

His voice dropped to a smug hush. โ€œYou want to know why Mr. Gerardo got infected? Why your Saunders Hospital, of all places, was hit?โ€

He didnโ€™t even hesitate to expose himself. After all, the truth was starting to leak anyway.

Yuniceโ€™s gaze darkened, her breath catching.

Mr. Gerardo had died innocent. Taylor had lost everything. Knowing the depth of it made Yunice furious.

But she kept calm. โ€œYour definition of power isโ€ฆ killing people for money?โ€

Paul grinned. โ€œWhen Iโ€™m finished with Taylor, Iโ€™m coming for you. I donโ€™t care what you want. Iโ€™ll lock you in a cage if I have to. Youโ€™ll be mine.โ€

โ€œIn your dreams,โ€ she snapped.

He lunged, grabbing her by the shoulder and neck. โ€œThen Iโ€™ll take you now!โ€

Before he could act, a sharp voice barked from the hallโ€“Tommy.

โ€œWhat do you think youโ€™re doing?!โ€

Startled, Paul dropped his grip and bolted.

Yunice exhaled, shaken.

Tommy rushed over, eyes wide as Paul sprinted down the hallway in his disguise.

โ€œWhat happened?โ€ Tommy asked, breathless.

โ€œHeโ€™s a black-market profiteer,โ€ Yunice replied, โ€œdeliberately spreading the virus for personal gain. Catch him!โ€

Tommyโ€™s face went grim. โ€œSecurityโ€™s already chasing him.โ€

He darted into Owenโ€™s room, dragging over a stepstool to inspect the busted camera.

โ€œHow the hell did the surveillance go out?โ€ he muttered.

Yunice followed him inside. โ€œProbably more of his handiwork.โ€

As Tommy focused on the camera, Yunice turned back to Owenโ€™s still form.

Heโ€™d likely passed out again after his earlier struggle.

She glanced at Tommyโ€™s backโ€“he was still busy tinkering.

If Paul was going to be her scapegoat, sheโ€™d better make use of him.

Now was the time.

Yunice knelt quickly, dragging the medicine box out from under the bed. She prepped the syringe that had already been set.

One last glanceโ€“Tommyโ€™s back was still turned.

Then she leaned over Owen and injected the antigen into his IV line.

Done.

She cleaned up swiftly, stuffing everything back into the case and pushing it back beneath the bed.

Just as she stood up, Tommy jumped off the stool. โ€œHuhโ€ฆ no issues with the wiringโ€ฆโ€

โ€œMaybe he used a signal jammer,โ€ Yunice said casually. โ€œWe should check the central system.โ€

โ€œGood idea.โ€

As they left, a new doctor entered to check on Owenโ€™s post-surgery condition.

Tommy and Yunice, as witnesses, were asked to stay behind for questioning.

โ€œI donโ€™t know who those people were,โ€ Yunice said smoothly. โ€œThey were already in my brotherโ€™s room when I got there.โ€

โ€œSir,โ€ another doctor called. He crouched beside the bed, pulling something from beneath it. โ€œWe found thisโ€“an empty injection box and a used syringe. What is this?โ€
