Chapter 678 The Saunders Family

Lily came out of the kitchen carrying a plate of food.

Peggy lounged on the sofa playing on her phone, while Owen sat at the dining table setting plates.

Both of them heard the doorbell, but neither made a move to check it.

Lily hesitated, set the dish on the table, and then went to the entryway to look at the video doorbell feed. Owen glanced at the lazy Peggy on the sofa, then set a bowl of rice aside. โ€œPeggy, take the food down.โ€

Peggy shot him a look, and after a brief exchange of glances, she frowned and pressed her lips together. Dragging her slippers reluctantly, she went to the table, picked up the bowl of rice, and headed to the basement.

The basement was pitch dark.

Peggy opened the door, turned on the light, and walked down the steps until she reached the cage. Inside the cage was Timothy.

Peggy looked at him with disgust, but didnโ€™t dare get too close, let alone stick her hands inside.

So she took the metal tongs from the wall and used them to slide the bowl through the bars.

Timothy was curled up in the cramped space, it was unclear if he was asleep or dead.

The moment the bowl touched the ground, he suddenly reached out and grabbed the tongs.

โ€œAh!โ€ Peggy screamed, immediately letting go.

Timothy sat up, his eyes dark and venomous as he stared at her.

But he couldnโ€™t make a soundโ€“his mouth had been sewn shut for two-thirds of its length, leaving only a narrow slit so he could barely eat.

Because her hands were shaking, the bowl toppled over, spilling food onto the floor and mixing with the filth inside the cage.

Peggy cursed in disgust. โ€œYou filthy dog! Eat your own crap!โ€

With that, she slammed the basement door shut.

In the living room, Lily glanced at the video doorbellโ€™s screen and instinctively took a step back. Her voice trembled with alarm. โ€œOwen, Yunice is outside.โ€

Owen froze with his fork in midair and looked at her.

His expression was complicated, while Lilyโ€™s was full of fear.

They had people and things in this house they couldnโ€™t let anyone see. They had been living behind closed doors for a long time, rarely letting outsiders inโ€“or going out themselves.

Why would Yunice come here?

Noโ€ฆ this was her home too. Of course she had every reason to come.

When Owen didnโ€™t respond, Lilyโ€™s voice shook as she added, โ€œItโ€™s not just Yunice. Wyatt is with her.โ€

They could ignore Yunice and refuse to let her in, but they wouldnโ€™t dare keep Wyatt out.

If Wyatt wanted to come in, he didnโ€™t need their permission.

Owen tightened his grip on his fork, and just then Peggy came back upstairs.

She was dripping in jewelry, her previous ordeals having done nothing to diminish her vanity.

โ€œGo open the door,โ€ Owen said with a frown.

Peggy glanced at him, rolled her eyes, and went to the front gate.

Ever since Wyatt had gotten hold of the video of her and Timothy, heโ€™d been using her like a servant.

She didnโ€™t dare leaveโ€“she was still married to Owen, and Owen had thirty billion. If she wanted a share of that, she couldnโ€™t leave, and she definitely couldnโ€™t turn him in.

They were all on the same boatโ€“if anyone drilled a hole, theyโ€™d all sink.

She didnโ€™t even know who was outside, but since Owen told her to open the door, she did.

When she unlatched it from the inside, she paused,

โ€œYuโ€ฆ Yunice?โ€ Peggy smoothed her hair quickly as her eyes flicked over the two people.

Yunice stepped in, speaking naturally. โ€œWhyโ€™s the door bolted in broad daylight?โ€

โ€œI saw the bamboo outside is overgrown. Why havenโ€™t you had it trimmed?โ€

Peggy hesitated, then muttered under her breath behind Yunice, โ€œWho knows what your Owen is thinkingโ€ฆโ€

She thought Yunice didnโ€™t yet know that Owen had already sold the Saundersโ€™s Hospital, and fearing she might try to claim part of the money, Peggy didnโ€™t dare bring it up.

If Yunice wanted to know, she could ask Owen herself.

Her petty scheming didnโ€™t escape Yuniceโ€™s notice.

Yunice knew perfectly well why Owen kept the door shut.

Heโ€™d sold the hospital, had no place to work, his health was deteriorating, and he was likely in constant painโ€“heโ€™d have no energy to leave the house.

He was probably just waiting for his passport paperwork to be completed so he could take his savings abroad for surgery.

Lily stood by the door, giving Yunice and Wyatt an awkward smile. โ€œYunice, Wyatt, youโ€™re here.โ€

Yunice gave her a once-over and lifted her lips. โ€œWhy so polite today?โ€

Lily looked down, fiddling with her hair without answering.

Yunice and Wyatt walked into the living room. Owen rose to his feet and looked over.

After half a month, his complexion had noticeably darkened, and even his lips were dark.

If Lily and Peggy had even a little medical knowledge, they would have seen the signs of Owenโ€™s worsening illness.

Facing the two, Owenโ€™s eyes darted uneasily. โ€œYunice, did youโ€ฆ need something?โ€

โ€œI missed Dad,โ€ Yunice said. โ€œCame back to see the old house.โ€
