Chapter 695 Who Am I?

โ€œWeโ€™ve already asked Owen. He said youโ€™re not Yunice, and youโ€™re not Elsie either. He doesnโ€™t even know who you are.โ€

Elsie said nothing.

โ€œAnd what did my mom say?โ€

โ€œLily gave the exact same answer as Owen.โ€

Elsie still said nothing.

The officerโ€™s voice hardened. โ€œSo who the hell are you?โ€

Elsie was stuck.

She clenched the hem of her shirt, trying to think her way through it.

Owen and Lily were denying her because they were afraid the truth would come outโ€“that theyโ€™d once helped her assume a false identity.

Her old identity was officially dead. The body had been cremated. They probably thought that if they kept denying her, the whole thing would just disappear.

But if she didnโ€™t admit to her connection with Timothy, sheโ€™d become a nobodyโ€“a person without any legal identity.

And if she did admit to being with Timothy, then she was nothing more than a hillbilly from the mountains, with no ties to the Saunders family whatsoever.

She was cornered.

Elsie hesitated for a momentโ€“then suddenly started laughing blankly, like sheโ€™d lost her mind. โ€œHehโ€ฆ Iโ€™m the eldest daughter of the Saunders family, heheโ€ฆ You all have to listen to meโ€ฆ Who am Iโ€ฆ I donโ€™t even know who I amโ€ฆ Do you know who I am?โ€

She grabbed the nearest officer, acting completely deranged.

The police looked at each other, stunned. In the end, because they couldnโ€™t determine her identity, and couldnโ€™t reach her family, and since Lily refused to take a DNA test with her, they had no way of pressing charges without solid identification.

All they could do was call in a psychiatrist. After confirming she was mentally ill, she was temporarily sent to a community psychiatric hospital.

But the hospital was poorly run and understaffed. Within a few days, Elsie escaped.

The first thing she did after getting out was look for Owen and Lily.

She was convinced theyโ€™d denied her only to avoid legal trouble, not because they truly didnโ€™t recognize her.

Taking advantage of the night and a lax nurse, she slipped into Owenโ€™s hospital room.

The second Owen saw her, his brows furrowed sharply. He immediately reached for his phone.

But Lily snatched it before he could grab it. Eyes red with tears, she cried, โ€œOwen, are you trying to push your sister to her death? Iโ€™ve already done what you askedโ€“I denied her. The cops believed Elsieโ€™s dead. No one will ever know you broke the law to change her identity. Why canโ€™t you just accept her now?โ€

Elsie stood there, one hand resting on her swollen belly, stunned.

She could hardly believe her ears. Owen wasnโ€™t doing this for her. He really had no intention of recognizing her anymore?

โ€œOwen, youโ€™re not going to acknowledge me? How could youโ€ฆ You promised me. You said youโ€™d treat me better than anyone else in your life. You said youโ€™d never accept Yunice. Itโ€™s only been three monthsโ€ฆ How could you change your mind so fastโ€ฆโ€

Tears streamed down her face.

But Owen kept his expression cold as he reached for the nurse call button.

Lily yanked it out of the wall before he could press it.

Just like how Owen had once yanked Yuniceโ€™s call buttonโ€“keeping her from asking for help while she was sick.

Owen stared at his mother, wide-eyed.

Lily cried, full of guilt. She knew Owen was still recovering and couldnโ€™t move easily, so she deliberately stepped back, out of reach.

โ€œSheโ€™s my daughter too,โ€ Lily said. โ€œI canโ€™t just stand by and watch her sufferโ€ฆโ€

Owenโ€™s voice was icy. โ€œFine. Since you want the truth, then letโ€™s lay it all out! Elsie, say it yourself! Youโ€™d never seen the real world. I gave you everythingโ€“good food, a nice home. You felt ashamed of your background, so I gave you status and credentials to cover it up. And how did you repay me? You took my money and gave it to that bastard father of yours! I treated you better than my own sister, and you destroyed my business, wrecked my family, ruined my health, and gave me a criminal record. Youโ€™re like a goddamn parasite that sucked the life out of me! And now you dare demand that I love you forever? Go find Timothy! Let him love you!โ€

Elsie trembled at his words, holding her head and sobbing uncontrollably. She started crying that it was all Timothyโ€™s fault. That heโ€™d forced her. That if she didnโ€™t go along with it, heโ€™d expose her.

She claimed sheโ€™d only treated Timothy well to shut him upโ€“for the sake of everyoneโ€™s reputation.

But no matter how eloquently she pleaded, Owenโ€“who had already crawled back from deathโ€“would never believe her again.

Heโ€™d finally seen the truth.

He didnโ€™t blame Yunice anymore. It was his and Elsieโ€™s own damn fault.

And since Elsie still insisted on making excuses, he figured he might as well tear her mask off.

He looked down at her huge, foul-smelling belly and sneered. โ€œIf youโ€™re so pure and innocent, then explain that belly of yours.โ€

Elsie sobbed, โ€œI was attacked by a monster! I passed out in the hospitalโ€ฆ I thought I was dead. But when I woke up, I was in a caveโ€ฆ Some maniac tortured meโ€ฆ and did this to meโ€ฆโ€
